But lately I’ve been wondering if it could be just as great when applied topically? A slew of new skincare products like masks and cleansers containing this ancient spice would have you thinking, but I wanted to see it for myself — without spending a lot of money unnecessarily.

These days, I’m less of a makeup junkie and more of a skincare connoisseur. My favorite self-indulging products are homemade remedies that I can easily make using healthy ingredients that I already have in my kitchen. So I decided to test the topical benefits of turmeric in a simple DIY mask made along with other skin-soothing ingredients — yogurt and honey — for five straight days.

Yogurt is known to provide a ton of skin benefits on its own, so I decided to use 1 heaping teaspoon of plain Greek yogurt in my mask. according to dr Hadley King, dermatologist at SKINNEY Medspa, yogurt contains “lactic acid that gently exfoliates by breaking down dead skin cells. This helps create a healthy glow, prevents acne, diminishes fine lines and reduces discoloration.”

The amount of turmeric and honey you use is entirely up to you. Being fair skinned, I haven’t been too generous with turmeric as too much could potentially turn my skin yellow. I opted for ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder. This was enough to test its anti-inflammatory properties, which King says reduce “redness, swelling, and irritation.”

Finally, I added about ½ teaspoon of honey to the mix to round out the formula with moisturizing and antibacterial properties to further nourish skin and help prevent acne.

Now that the chemistry part of the experiment was over, it was time to smear this stuff on my face. So was my skin. (Important note: If you are allergic to turmeric in recipes, it is recommended not to apply the spice to your skin.)

DAY 1

I started the experiment and decided to apply the turmeric yogurt honey mask for about five minutes. The consistency of the yogurt base was smooth as I layered the mixture with an old foundation brush, making sure to cover my entire face.

I rinsed the mask off with warm water and patted my skin dry with a washcloth. The first thing I noticed was a distinct glow and the tiniest hint of a yellow cast. I expected my face to smell unpleasantly strong, but the honey produced a pleasantly sweet aroma. There was no sign of irritation apart from a brief flush in my cheeks after rinsing off which I can only assume was my skin getting used to the turmeric. So far, so good.

DAY 2

I decided to leave the mask on for seven minutes, which was enough time for the mixture to dry completely. My skin initially felt just as smooth as it had after rinsing off the night before, and the light acne on my cheeks and forehead had reduced. I caught a few faint yellow spots on my hairline, otherwise my skin remained spotless.

DAY 3

I did two back-to-back outdoor workouts, and despite applying sunscreen a few times throughout the day, my pale complexion turned pink. According to June Jacobs, the CEO of June Jacobs Skincare, the combination of turmeric, Greek yogurt, and honey “work synergistically to heal the skin,” specifically against acne and inflammation.

Well, wasn’t that super convenient?

Rather than soaking my skin in aloe vera that evening, I opted to apply my turmeric mask liberally to ensure any visible signs of redness were covered. I left it on for ten minutes before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. The inflammation was gone within minutes and my face didn’t feel quite as irritated.

DAY 4

When I woke up the next morning, the inflammation had drastically reduced. And while my face still looked a little flushed, my skin felt soft instead of dry to the touch.

DAY 5

On the last day of the test there was no sign of sunburn, but a healthy glow. My skin felt super soft and most of my acne cleared up. Success!

While King says it’s safe to use a topical turmeric mask like this daily, how often you use it depends on how much turmeric is mixed into the formula, how much of the product you’re using, and yours skin type. I probably won’t incorporate this mask into my daily beauty routine, but it will definitely be a good formula for when my skin is feeling dry, looking sallow, or after a sunburn.

First, let’s look at the benefits of turmeric, specifically in the form of skin treatments. We’ll talk specifically about the soap later; First, let’s look at what happens when you use something with turmeric, as far as folk wisdom goes. Here’s what various people have claimed turmeric can do for your skin.

Remove dark circles under your eyes. The idea is that turmeric is anti-inflammatory. The idea here is that turmeric can lighten the appearance of stretch marks, but that’s not entirely true. What really happens – or supposedly happens – is that the skin surrounding the stretch marks lightens to better match the color of the stretch marks and effectively hides them.

There are, of course, a number of other purported benefits of turmeric when used all over the body. It has been reported to speed up wound healing, fight body inflammation, heal dandruff, increase hair growth, fight dry skin, prevent UV damage, and more. It’s traditional medicine, it’s been used for pretty much everything at some point in history. The question is how much of this is true?

How Turmeric Works

Turmeric, or rather the active ingredient curcumin, works in several ways.

All of these observations are true and backed by scientific studies. The trick is that these studies typically use a concentrated, isolated form of curcumin, rather than just the spice turmeric applied as an ointment. However, some studies have been done on turmeric alone.

This 2017 study looked at the effects of a turmeric essential oil on 60 women, looking for two things: the ability to lighten skin and the ability to suppress androgenic hair growth. It turned out that both were true. A turmeric essential oil could lighten the skin.

The caveat here is that the skin-lightening effect only lasted for about two weeks after stopping use. In other words, it only lightens the skin for as long as you use the treatment. When you stop, your skin will gradually return to its natural color. Additionally, while it can noticeably lighten skin, its effects are most pronounced in women with naturally darker skin. A white woman looking to fade will have a much harder time getting noticeable results than an Indian woman looking for a lighter complexion.

The effects of turmeric on the skin only work when it is concentrated and applied directly to the skin. Essential oil lotions and isolated curcumin compounds are typically used for testing, rather than just store-bought turmeric mixed with coconut oil or any other DIY lotion you want to make.

How exactly does turmeric work? It appears that curcumin, when applied topically, can suppress the production of melanin by skin cells. With less melanin, they become lighter. When turmeric is no longer applied, melanin production returns to normal and the skin darkens again.

So how can this be applied as part of turmeric soap?

Turmeric soap is exactly what you might think when you read the name. It’s simply a bar of soap, usually a bar but sometimes a liquid soap that contains turmeric. Organic turmeric soap contains pure turmeric, while some turmeric soaps contain isolated curcumin instead.

The truth is, nothing you do to your skin is going to last long. Your skin is naturally constantly growing, shedding and being replaced when the outer layers are damaged and the inner layers grow back to replace them. While turmeric can lighten the color of your skin, it only lasts as long as that skin lasts, and as your skin cycle turns, your skin will return. Regular use of turmeric soap is believed to be able to continuously whiten the new skin for a continuously lighter shade.

As for some of the other claimed benefits and treatments, we’re more inclined to think that soap helps as much as turmeric. Turmeric has some observed benefits for actual skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, that’s true. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties can help skin heal and reduce the occurrence and severity of flare-ups. This keeps your skin healthier and more radiant.

This means that if you have an otherwise darker complexion in your ethnic background, turmeric is likely to do a good job of lightening your skin’s appearance. If you have a white or otherwise pale complexion, turmeric may not do as much for you. After all, melanin production has to be present in the first place for melanin production to be suppressed.

Another warning is the coloring properties of turmeric. Many modern turmeric beauty items don’t contain what we think of as traditional turmeric. They contain Kasturi turmeric instead, a version that doesn’t leave stains. Unfortunately, there are very few studies to determine if this turmeric has the same health benefits as regular turmeric. It may not have the same curcumin content and may not really work. You’ll have to wait for new studies on the differences between them or try it yourself to see if it works for you.

Turmeric has a wide range of health benefits when you eat it, but these don’t extend to your skin beyond the basic anti-inflammatory benefits in your diet. It will not change your skin color. You will need a topical cream, soap or other preparation for this.

The Final Verdict

Given what we know about turmeric and how skin works, we can say that turmeric soap can probably lighten your skin, but more likely if your skin is naturally slightly darker. Some forms of turmeric soap may not contain enough curcumin to have a noticeable effect. So look for soaps with higher concentrations, more isolated curcumin, or essential oils incorporated into their recipes.

Raw turmeric, turmeric paste or turmeric powder – which is best for soap making? I recommend turmeric powder for melting and pouring soap. Turmeric paste adds too much liquid and raw turmeric root will not disperse properly in the soap.

Turmeric gives the soap a beautiful golden hue. You can craft with the exact amounts to achieve different shades. To color 450 g of soap base you will need:
