Should I Turn Off Fluorescent Lights When Leaving a Room?

Should I turn off neon lights when leaving a room?

Short answer: Turn them off if you’re going to be away for more than about 15 minutes. But…

There are a few misconceptions about fluorescent lighting that keep too many people from turning off the lights to conserve energy. The first misconception is that it takes more energy to start a fluorescent light than it takes to run it. The second misconception is that turning a fluorescent light on and off will wear it out immediately. Like many of our myths about energy, there is some truth in this belief. (Special thanks to Steve Selkowitz of Lawrence Berkeley National Labs for the research on which this article was based.)

Misconception #1

It takes more energy to start a fluorescent light than it does to run it, so leave the light on all the time to save money on your electric bills.

reality

When you turn on a fluorescent lamp (correctly called a “lamp”), there is a very brief surge in current as the ballast charges the cathodes and causes the lamp to start. This inrush current can be many times greater than the normal operating current of the lamp. However, the peak current draw typically lasts no more than 1/10th of a second and draws the equivalent of about 5 seconds of normal operation. So if you turn your fluorescent light off and on more frequently than every 5 seconds, you’re using more power than normal. So normal switching of fluorescent lights has very, very, very little impact on an electricity bill.

Misunderstanding #2

Turning fluorescent lights off and on consumes them instantly.

reality

Electric lamps have a published life expectancy rating. This rating is in the hundreds of hours for many incandescent lamps and thousands of hours for most fluorescent lamps. Fluorescent lights have a lifespan based on how many hours they stay on each time you turn them on. This is usually referred to as the “burn time” and for fluorescent lamps the burn time is three hours.

Every time a fluorescent lamp is switched on, a tiny amount of the coating on the electrodes is burned off. Eventually enough coating will be burnt off and the lamp will not start. Most full-size fluorescent lights are rated to last 20,000 hours if left on for 3 hours each time you turn them on. This means that the lamp has around 6,667 starts to use. (20,000/3 = 6,667)

If you burn your fluorescent lamps for less than 3 hours at any given time, you will use your potential faster. If you “burn” them for more than 3 hours per launch, you will consume your launches more slowly. However, you pay energy costs for the lamp’s operating time, and the most efficient lamp is the one that is not on when not in use. -END-
