If you’ve been looking for an easy way to brighten up a drab corner in a room, look no further than a curio cabinet, also known as a corner curio cabinet. This cabinet style is designed for displaying curios that are simply collections and valuable items. It is usually made of wood and features metal shelves as well as glass panels.

For inspiration on how to use curiosity cabinets, we invited New York-based interior designer Alexander Doherty to share his top tips, including what styles work best for this piece to the smartest way to organize items in it.

While curio cabinets are usually found in traditional design schemes, don’t fret if this is far from your decorating style. “I placed them in a slightly more modern space and used them as a historical and traditional element for the space because the collectibles on display tell a story,” says Doherty. “Although the term ‘cabinet of curiosities’ is a bit old-fashioned, these display cases are appearing more and more frequently in modern home designs. They are ideal for living spaces or dining rooms that are on display for guests and a source of family stories.”

With curio cabinets, the beauty is in the mix. They are perfect for displaying a range of sentimental items. “It’s a great display solution for anything of value to a homeowner, especially items that have a story to tell,” says Doherty. “Curio cabinets are a little more tidy and understated than a traditional bookcase or open wall shelf.”

And collections look good when there are overlapping objects that provide density and different heights.”

For a cupboard to be antique, it should be over 100 years old. Even if it’s not antique, you can have a beautiful, valuable display cabinet. Any piece from an earlier or specific period that is not 100 years old is considered vintage.

There are a number of distinguishing features when identifying an antique cabinet:

Even with newer furniture there are other incredible qualities that make a display case a spectacular find. Look for unique features, solid construction and quality craftsmanship or brands. If something is unique or rare, these qualities increase its potential value.

So technically, this beautiful mahogany china cabinet from the 1930s is not yet antique. However, its value will show with age, provided it is the right quality. It also works perfectly to display that Wedgewood china set your grandmother got for her wedding.

At online auctions, you’re more likely to find rarities that stand out from the masses of everyday items in retail.

How much space does my rabbit need?

In the wild, a rabbit covers a lot of ground. A cottontail white rabbit, for example, has a home range of up to 20 acres. They don’t need to provide as much room to move, but your rabbit needs enough room to run, jump, stand up, and stretch their hind legs. And we all want our pets’ homes to be as comfortable as possible.

Your rabbit needs two types of space: living space and exercise. The stable is called the living area, including a nesting box or other hiding place. Exercise room means running. Ideally, these should be as large as your space and budget will allow. Observe at least the following recommendations.

RWAF Policies

The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund recommends your rabbit’s hutch be big enough for “three jumps” from end to end. That means at least six feet long, two feet high, and two feet deep. A 6ft x 2ft x 2ft hutch allows your rabbit to hop, stand up, stretch and move around comfortably.

Our recommendations

We consider the RWAF guidelines as a minimum starting point. Many of our stables are larger than this. Adding a run can provide your rabbit with a safe place to exercise, dig, play, and other natural behaviors.

Even if your bunnies are young, buying a larger hutch now will save you the hassle of having to buy a new one when they get too small.

In addition, you should provide your rabbit with plenty of toys and activities for mental stimulation. Because nobody likes to be bored, and the same goes for your bunny.

Do different breeds need different sized stables?

With the exception of giant breeds, the recommended minimum hutch sizes should work for most rabbits. But some small and medium-sized breeds also have special needs.

Rabbit with a lion’s head

Lionhead rabbits are good-natured, friendly, and smart. However, they can also be more shy than the average rabbit.

For this reason, your lionhead bunny needs at least a hutch of the minimum size in a quiet place. Make sure you provide plenty of hiding spots, whether it’s a bunny crate or even an activity tunnel. Also, give them lots of attention and toys to keep their active minds busy.

Mini Lop and Dutch Dwarf

You might think that a miniature breed would take up less space. But the Mini Lop averages three to six pounds, which isn’t much smaller than regular breeds. Give your mini lop the same space you would give any other bunny.

An adult Dutch dwarf, on the other hand, weighs only two and a half pounds. That’s the size of an eight week old kitten! You can probably get by with a smaller habitat for a Dutch Dwarf. Just make sure to follow the “three hop rule”.

How big should a hutch be for two rabbits?

We recommend at least 1.1 square meters of space per rabbit.

Our individual stalls offer plenty of space for a single roll. Our two-storey double stables offer enough space for a couple. A two-story hutch with its doors and stairs also gives your rabbit a more interesting living space.

How much space do you need for three rabbits?

three rabbits? Well, that’s going to take a bit of ingenuity.

Few hutches have enough space to comfortably house three rabbits. One solution is to have more than one stable. A disadvantage of this is that the rabbit living in solitary quarters can become lonely. If you choose this option, make sure their pens share an exercise area and that all of your rabbits spend a lot of time together in that area.

A better solution would be to adopt an even number of rabbits so no one is left out.

A run is essential

A rabbit run is a large, fenced-in outdoor space for your rabbits to roam around in. Many have a wooden frame and wire walls.

A run adds more space to your rabbit setup. When your run is connected to your coop, your rabbits can play and exercise on their own schedule during the day. At night, simply secure the door connecting your coop and run to keep predators out and your rabbits in.

Speaking of predators, it’s important to take steps to keep your rabbit safe from digging and digging. This is how you protect your rabbits from foxes and other garden visitors.

Rabbit Hutch Tips

Here are some ways you can make the most of your barn and facility.

Choose your stable location carefully

Rabbits are very sensitive to heat. Temperatures above 26 degrees Celsius can be dangerous. Therefore, place your barn out of direct sunlight and always keep an eye on the temperature in summer.

Provide enough linens

Provide enough bedding to cover the floor of the coop. Don’t worry about using too much. It’s better to use too much than too little.

When the temperature cools down, your rabbit will use the litter to keep warm. At other times, bedding absorbs excess moisture and makes cleaning easier.

Keep your coop off the ground

A stable that stands on the ground is susceptible to moisture. This can damage the wood. It can also expose both the wood and your rabbit to harmful mold and mildew. Hutches that are on the ground can also expose your rabbits to predators.

All of our stalls are elevated to mitigate these issues.

If you put your run on the ground, make sure you put it on a hard surface so your rabbits can’t dig up. Alternatively, you can sink wire mesh into the ground along the perimeter to deter both your rabbits and any predators.

Make a regular Hutch M.O.T.

Inspect your coop at least once a week for damage from moisture, chewing, insects, etc.
