The spoon trick

Second, if we’re honest, I don’t like this method. I find it way too dangerous. I feel like I’m tearing out all the lashes.

The D-curl can help turn down-swept and straight lashes into the widened doll eye look. This type of curl is typically used to create volume and mega-volume looks for clients who prefer dramatic lashes.

M Curl – Very similar to an LL curl and ideal for down lashes, straight lashes, closed lids and deep set eyes. The M wave is dramatic, if you zoom in you can see an upward wave. It’s also a perfect curl style to widen straight lashes.

LL Curl – The LL Curl is perfect for clients with downturned or straight lashes. Designed to lift naturally straight lashes, the LL Curl is generally straight with slightly curled tips. An LL curl can be used for both classic and volume sets. The LL curl can also help widen the look of the eyes, making it a great choice for clients with deep-set or hooded eyes.

Top tip: Because there are different layers of lashes along the lash line, you can actually mix curls and lengths on different layers or sections to create the perfect look.

Deciding on the right curl for your client takes time and practice. But remember to talk to your customers, do your research, and keep experimenting.

Classic lashes are the next best thing. You can also create a more natural look or a more dramatic look with classic lashes. The thicker the eyelash extensions you use, the more dramatic or thick your set will look. With classic eyelash diameters, you can only attach one eyelash extension to one natural eyelash.

If you’ve ever watched endless makeup tutorials online, you’re not alone… That happens to the best of us. YouTube binge aside, I’m sure you’ve noticed a trending topic related to eye shape. These are makeup looks that complement your natural eye shape by accentuating different areas. From a more open gaze to highlighting a specific feature, different looks suit different eye shapes. The same is true of eyelash extensions.

Not many people know that there are actually different types of eyelash extensions. Many lash salons don’t even offer different styles and instead just lay down and start adding extensions as soon as your appointment starts. When this happens, do your best to escape because you’ve probably found a bad eyelash technician!

First, let’s look at the top 4 eyelash extension styles. Then we’ll go through each eye shape and bring the two together.

A Note About Eyelash Extension Styles: While there are four main styles, there can be major differences in length, lash thickness, curl, number of lashes attached, and overlap between styles. A good lash technician will be able to customize your lashes not only to your eye shape, but also to your preferences and personal style!

Let’s start…

The natural eye

The goal of this look is to make the lashes look natural. You’ll appear like one of the lucky few blessed with long, full lashes.

The natural eye follows the same contours of your natural lashes. Fairly even length across the eyelid, with slightly less on the inner and outer edges. To mimic eyelashes at all stages of the natural growth cycle, extensions of varying lengths are placed directly on the eye.

The open eye

This style accentuates the center of the eye, adding volume and length in the center of the eyelid and tapering at each end to create a symmetrical gradient.

Traditionally, this style uses lashes of around 8mm for the corners and between 12 and 14mm for the center of the eyelid.

The cat eye

You may be familiar with this style from eye makeup tutorials that use eyeliner to create a curl at the outer corner of the eye… The same can be done with eyelash extensions but in a more dramatic and feminine way.

The lashes start at their shortest length at the inner corner of the eye and gradually taper until they reach their maximum length at the outer corner of the eye. Up to the outer corner, the difference in length is about 50% greater. An initial play of 9 mm at the inside corner would therefore result in an outside corner play of 14 mm.

There is usually also a small decrease in length and at the very end to taper a little, usually when the maximum length is 14mm the extreme corner can taper to 13mm.

A slight variation on the cat eye is the “kitten eye” which is exactly the same idea but the difference between the shortest and longest lashes is closer to 25% – so a 9mm inner corner lash would result in a narrower outer corner lash up to 11-12mm.

Taylor Swift is regularly spotted with cat-eye style lash extensions that perfectly complement her upside-down eye shape.

The baby doll eye

A cross between the natural and open eye styles, the doll eye is characterized by length just above the eye line with the longest lashes in the center of the eye.

This look makes our eyes appear bigger and fuller—but not to the extent of the open-eye style. Megan Fox is known for having classic doll eyelash extensions.

Now that we’ve covered the 4 basic eyelash extension styles, let’s look at what shape your eye is so I can recommend an eyelash style that’s perfect for you. But that’s just a starting point – a good lash technician can give you more specific advice based on your personal style and whether the lashes are for an event or everyday life.

Eye Shape Basics

There are three main categories of eye shape.

Almond oval and round …

Then there are dozens more sub-categories where small differences like eye angle, size, proximity and eyelid characteristics allow for more accurate recommendations. You’ll also find that you can fit into multiple categories, for example you might have round, narrowly set, upturned eyes – effectively putting you into three categories. If that’s the case, you should choose the category that is most prominent.

The almond eye shape is the most popular, so many makeup tutorials focus on achieving this look—emphasizing parts of the eye through contouring and other makeup techniques.

For this article, I’ve selected eight of the most common eye types I see in my salon. These are almond-shaped, close-fitting, deep-set, prominent, downturned, single-lidded, round, and hooded eyes.

Now it’s time to categorize your eye so we can give you some eyelash extension style recommendations!

In conventional beauty, the almond eye shape is the most alluring and attractive. The description of this eye shape is in the name – shaped like an almond. The length is greater than the height and there is a slight upward swing at the outer corners.

Recommendations for eyelash lengthening for almond eyes

You’re in luck because every style looks good, so it’s more of a personal preference. Choosing the cat eye style will accentuate the length of your eye and give it a very alluring and mysterious look.

Using the Open Eye or Doll Eye will make your eyes look bigger – this can be a great option if you want a more dramatic look or if you have an eye color that pops like green or blue.

Close Eyes

This is an eye spacing category rather than an eye shape, and is characterized by a gap between the eyes of less than one eye. So if you measure the length of your eye from the outer to the inner corner of your eye, then measure the distance from the inner corner of your left and right eye – if the second measurement is smaller than the first, then you fall into the near-set’ eyes category.

Recommendations for eyelash lengthening for narrow eyes

The goal here would be to draw attention to the outer corner of the eye by adding longer, cat-eye style lashes in that area. Creating extra length on the lashes in the outer corner and gradually shorter lengths moving towards the inner corner will make a big difference.

Deep-set eyes

Again, we’re more in the area of ​​an eye position than a shape, but this type of eye has its own style guide… The deep set eye simply sits deeper in the eye socket. So, the goal of the lash style is to give the impression of showing off more.

Since makeup is a 2D application (meaning it sits flat against your skin) and eyelash extensions are 3D (meaning they protrude and create depth) – if you have deep-set eyes, eyelash extensions are actually much more effective to get because we can really create extra depth.

Recommendations for eyelash lengthening for deep-set eyes

To make the eye stand out, I usually recommend the Baby Doll or Open Eye lash style as these create the illusion that the eye is sitting further out.

If your eyes also fall into the round category, then choose the baby doll. While other shapes (particularly the covered eye) should opt for the open eye lash style.

protruding eyes

The opposite of deep-set eyes are protruding eyes that sit further outside of the eye socket. I would estimate that 80% of the time they also have a round eye shape.

Since you already have big round eyes (which makes you very happy!), the goal here is to accentuate the outer corners.

Eyelash lengthening recommendations for protruding eyes

Go for the cat eye style or a variation of it like the kitten eye which is a shorter version. Adding the extra length and fullness in the outer corners of your eyes simulates that almond shape and really draws attention to your big, beautiful eyes.

Downward eyes

This is more of a “corner of the eye” where the outer corner of the eye sits directly opposite (on a horizontal plane) or below the inner corner of the eye.

Eyelash extension recommendations for down-facing eyes

The aim is to create volume at the upper outer corner of the eye to lift the eye. The down eye is perfect for the cat eye lash style and as long as you have the natural lashes to support them you can certainly pull off long extensions up to 14mm at that outer angle.

hooded eyes

That means you have a little extra skin just above the crease of the eye. This can vary widely, from a slight, almost indistinguishable cap to an overlapping cap that can sit on the lash line.

In this case we want to open the eye, so of course this fits perfectly with the Open Eye style. We add fullness and length to the center of the eye, tapering as we approach the inner and outer corners of the eye.

Using the open eye style with covered eyes always produces dramatic before and after photos as it can add a lot more depth and draw attention to the eye itself.

Monolid / unilid eyes

Eyes with a single lid have no visible crease, so eyelash extensions can create the appearance of a more open and larger eye shape. This eye shape also usually has straighter natural lashes, so choosing a curl with more flare will add drama and openness.

Recommendations for eyelash lengthening for monolid/single lid eyes

A mix of a baby doll for a natural look and a bit of cat eye to add extra length to the outer corners always looks good and accentuates the elongated eye shape, making it even more appealing.

round eyes

If you’re blessed with big eyes, then they’re probably already your most dominant trait. The round eye shape is characterized by having a height that is the same as (or very close to) the length.

Recommendations for eyelash lengthening for round eyes

My most common recommendation is the cat eye because it adds length to your eye and helps balance your eye more towards that desirable almond shape while maintaining the beauty of your round eyes.

Almond eyes are the most common eye shape. About twice as long as they are tall, they are the most versatile shape when it comes to styling! Clients with almond eyes can wear virtually any styling they desire as the doe eye, natural eye and textured cards flatter this eye shape both in person and in photos. Therefore, choosing a card depends on the impact your client is hoping to create.

If your client wants their eyes to appear larger, opt for a doe eye that places the longest extensions in the center of the eyelid. This opens the eyes to a brighter, more alert and awake look. (Add a few lower lashes to widen the eyes even more!).

If the client prefers to elongate their natural shape even more, a cat eye is the best option. Maximizing the length beyond the outer edge of the iris gives a sultry effect as attention is drawn to the outer corners. To increase the effect even more, switch to a stronger sweep in the outermost quarter of the lash line – this gives extra lift. Pro tip: keep the look uncluttered by reducing the length at the far corner; this prevents flaccidity.

Essentially any curl will work with almond eyes, so again choose this based on the effect your client wants. As an artist, an almond-eyed client is a chance to flex your creative muscles!

2. ROUND EYES

Trying to figure out the best eyelash extensions for your client can be quite difficult. Everyone has a unique face and eye shape, just like choosing a hairstyle, the bob hairstyle may not suit your face shape.

We know how difficult it can be, that’s why we’re here to simplify the process of choosing lash styles for your client. A good lash technician will always ask you to come for a patch test 48 hours before your appointment to see if you have any allergies to the lash glue used. They will then look closely at your unique eye shape to determine which eyelash extensions to use.

Below is a breakdown of the best eyelash extensions for every eye shape.

For little eyes

Small, petite eyes can look boring and tiring, but when styled properly, they can look bigger and brighter.

Eyelash technician: To make the eye appear larger, short lengths and medium lengths of a B curl should be used. Make sure to use medium lengths in the middle outer eye to create a big, round eye image.

Customer: If you have small eyes, ask for a B curl lash. This eyelash type is natural and gives you a fuller look.

For monolid eyes

Monolid or slip eyes are eyes that do not have a crease. Depending on the size of your eyelid, the lash line can disappear under the lid. You want lashes to open your eyes.

Eyelash technician: To open the eyes, we recommend a voluminous L-curl.

Client: Suggest asking for a dramatic upward curl lash – L curl lash. The more curved the eyelashes, the more your eyes open.

For almond eyes

Almond eyes, as the name suggests, are an eye in the shape of an almond. This shape is very common and versatile, so it suits any eyelash style.

Eyelash technician: Stay away from thick lashes and opt for long and dramatic lashes with a C curl. Start with short lengths and lengthen towards the end.

Customer: If your eyes are already big, we would recommend asking for a more natural C curl. Because the eye shape is versatile, you really can go for any style you want.

Let’s start with J Curl. You won’t use J-curl lashes very often, but when you do, you’ll be jumping for joy that they were an option! This curl is specifically designed for clients who have straight lashes that appear almost down. These clients are tricky, and there are a few options you can use. J curl gives you the most natural and easiest way to lengthen your natural lashes!

The next option for clients with straight lashes will be a B curl! This option gives a little more “lift” to the downward lashes. This curl has a little more curl than a J curl but is still a great option for clients with difficult straight lashes.

I’m going to step out of line here. The third option for clients with straight lashes is an L+ curl. An L+ curl is basically a C or D curl with a flat base. Don’t worry, I’ll cover C and D curls next. Due to the flat base of the L+ Curl, you can give your tricky client the ultimate lift and the curl will still adhere properly and completely to the base of the lashes! These are by far the most visually rewarding.

So how do you know which ones to use? Better yet, how do you determine which to use on a client?
