I have to admit that I didn’t see the first few minutes of the film. I haven’t read the book either, so I’m going to write about this film as if it were a work of art in its own right, which it is. Under the Skin is a new image from Jonathan Glazer, who also directed Birth with Nicole Kidman and several other music videos for bands like Radiohead. The main character, Alien Laura, is played by the famous actress Scarlett Johansson. First, there is no overt narrative in this film because it doesn’t have much meaning or importance here. At its most basic level, it is the story of an alien who imposes a woman and seduces men from across Scotland in order to suck their flesh. This is the simplest synopsis of the film. On a deeper level, it is a serious study of our society. The main focus of the film is on the inside and outside of things, the philosophy of form and material. Johansson’s character struggles in this society. She is always portrayed as swimming against the tide, getting lost in the sea of ​​hurrying people who don’t want to dig deeper into things because they know they could get hurt. This is presented in a very subtle visual way. For example, roses look good in the movie, but they have spikes that make the rose seller’s hands bleed. A piece of cake seems delicious, but the taste of it is disgusting. It’s always the battle between surface and depth in this film, first impression and further investigation. I believe it is a very important issue for our society where people are afraid to make commitments, where they are looking for quick pleasures when they need true and honest love. The film is visually and stylistically very strong. To give the reader a sense of what it is, I’ll say that it’s some sort of Kubrick, Lynch, and von Trier combination Sign on a building that reads “Open 24”, which is quite ironic since no one is in the film is really open. The director deliberately plays a lot with this open and closed concept. The music is also somewhat similar to Eyes Wide Shut and I think Under the Skin takes full advantage of it as a form of expression. You can also feel the influence of 2001: A Space Odyssey with all those shots of abstract liquids and close-ups of a human eye. Lynch – for the dreamy, surreal sequences and the guy with the ugly face. I see it as a direct reference to his film The Elephant Man, where he also talks about the inner beauty of a human being. Von Trier – for the sea scene Breaking the Waves, for the foggy scenes in the Antichrist forest. As is usual with von Trier, someone might accuse this film of cheap shock value. I don’t think that’s the case. The film is indeed a bit provocative, but at the same time all these provocations are justified by the message that the director wants to convey. So you can easily feel the influence of other directors, maybe some references, but I should say that this film doesn’t lack originality at all. The directorial choices and musical choices are as powerful as the 2.5 minute closeup of Nicole Kidman’s face in Birth. If you’ve seen that scene, you know what you’re dealing with here. While the images are very telling and extremely powerful in my opinion, Under the Skin has received many opposing reactions. I personally think the film is a masterpiece and worthy of the Golden Lion, but there are people who actually hated it and booed it after seeing it. I can’t really understand why they did that, but I love it when an artwork evokes emotions and evokes such different reactions. It means it’s not mediocre and that it will generate discussion, maybe some self-reflection, which is always a good thing. The film suggests that I should go into more detail and analyze things carefully from start to finish, but I won’t do it just because I want other people to see it first and draw their own conclusions. But obviously, Under the Skin requires more analysis than this. I just want to say that I was blown away by what I saw on screen and what I heard from the speakers. I hope to see it again on the big screen. It has so much power and challenges the most important, essential things of our existence – our values ​​as human beings. Where are we going, where are we hurrying? Maybe we need to stop and look at the beauty around us? Maybe we should stop being superficial towards others? Or are we perhaps empty like balloons ourselves? For me it’s definitely the best film of the 70th Venice Film Festival and one of the best films I’ve seen in my life.
