What is a novena?

This Catholic practice of prayer probably comes from the “first novena” shared in Acts. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples gathered to ask him about the restoration of Israel. Jesus said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or seasons which the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:7-8).

So the disciples and Mary waited together and prayed that the Holy Spirit would guide them. Finally, nine days later, the Holy Spirit descended on her. “When the time of Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place” (Acts 2:1). When the disciples prayed together for nine days for the coming of the Holy Spirit, they followed the form of novena prayer that is so popular today.

We pray for novenas for a specific purpose or grace, such as for a loved one, healing, forgiveness, clarity in making a big decision, etc. However, they are not magic. We cannot assume that our prayers will be answered immediately. And sometimes what we pray for isn’t exactly what we need. Rather, we pray novenas to grow in patience and to place our trust in God, just as the apostles prayed in anticipation of the Holy Spirit coming to them.

We pray novenas to become disciples, to grow in discipline, and to open our hearts to God’s will. Whether our purpose is fulfilled or not, we end the nine days in gratitude for God’s presence in our lives.

When do you pray a novena?

Some novenas are prayed at specific times, such as the novena of Divine Mercy, which begins on Good Friday. Traditionally, many people choose to pray novenas asking for the intercession of a saint during the nine days leading up to the feast day of this saint. If you pray before a sacrament or event, pray the novena nine days before or after it. In truth, one can say a novena at any time. Novenas guide us to strengthen our trust in God – and we need that in all situations in life.

How to Pray: A Novena

Identify your intention.

Before you commit to praying for nine days, take some time to think about your intention for prayer. Do you want to mentally prepare for an event? Or pray for a loved one who is struggling? Perhaps you are simply looking for encouragement to develop a strong habit of prayer. Remember, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance is never a bad idea!

Choose a novena.

After taking some time to prepare for prayer, choose a novena that reflects your intention. This could be a prayer for that specific purpose, or it could be a novena to a saint who is known and loved in the subject you are struggling with or for whom you have gratitude at this time in your life. Know that it doesn’t have to be “perfect”; Hopefully, taking time out each day to pray for a specific purpose will bring you clarity and peace and guide you to put your trust in God.

Dedicate nine days.

Once you begin a novena, dedicate time each day to be present with God and pray with Him. Sometimes it’s difficult to stay on track. We recommend reserving a specific time and setting a reminder on your phone (or in Hallow) or on your calendar for the nine days. You might also consider asking someone to pray the novena with you to hold each other accountable.

Embrace the novena.

As you embark on this prayer journey, try to embrace it fully each day. Each day may seem a little different to you, but try to accompany your time in prayer with other acts of faith. It could be social media fasting or gossip, or it could be doing something good for someone else every day. A novena (from Latin novem, “nine”) is an ancient tradition of devotional prayer in Christianity, consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine consecutive days or weeks.[1] The nine days between Ascension Day and Pentecost are often regarded as the first novena, when the disciples gathered in the Upper Room and devoted themselves to prayer.[2]

In some Christian communities, such as Africa, Latin America, and the Philippines, novena traditions are popular and include devotional rituals such as communal prayers, the decoration of statues, the singing of hymns with music, and communal fiesta events over drinks, refreshments, or processions.

Novenas are most commonly prayed by members of the Roman Catholic Church, but also by Lutherans, Anglicans, and Eastern Orthodox Christians; they were also used in ecumenical Christian contexts.[3] The prayers are often taken from devotional prayer books, or consist of reciting the rosary (a “rosary novena”), or short prayers throughout the day. Novena prayers are usually printed in small booklets, and the novena is often dedicated to a particular angel, saint, Marian title of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or one of the Persons of the Holy Trinity.

The word novena comes from the Latin word for nine. The practice of the novena is based on early Christianity, where masses of devotional prayers were held for a deceased person for nine days.[4] The practice can trace its origins to an early Greek and Roman custom performed by families, consisting of nine days of mourning after the death of a loved one, followed by a feast originally associated with Catholic writers such as St. Augustine, Pseudo-Alcuin, prompted and John Beleth to warn Christians not to emulate the custom.[5]

Over time, members of the Roman Catholic faith began to perform the novena with Christian themes such as the nine months Jesus spent in the womb, the abandonment of his spirit at the ninth hour, and the occasion in the Upper Room with the Twelve Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary, as they prayed for nine days until the Holy Spirit descended on Pentecost. In the New Testament, this biblical event is often quoted from Acts 1:12-2:5. The Fathers of the Church also gave special meaning to the number nine, considering it a symbol of the imperfect man turning to God in prayer (because of its closeness to the number ten, which represents perfection and God).[5]

Papal recognition[ edit ]

The practice of the novena grew in the Middle Ages, involving nine days of devout prayer before a feast in honor of a saint identified on a liturgical calendar. By the 11th century, the practice of novenas in Christianity had become a means of asking for spiritual or personal favors through a saint such as the Virgin Mary. After the Protestant Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church formally allowed novenas, notably through the papal approval of a large number of novenas by Pope Pius IX[4].

There are three recognized categories of novenas in the Roman Catholic Church, although this distinction is not exclusive:

According to standard liturgical norms, novenas may be performed in church, at home, or wherever solemn prayer is appropriate, although some novenas with indulgences require church attendance. Sometimes a special candle or incense is lit at the beginning of the novena that burns during the nine days of prayer.

The first chapter of the General Principles of Sacrosanctum Concilium, No. 13, of Vatican II (1962-1965) attempted to provide guidance on the place of novenas in Christian piety:

Africa [edit]

Novena practices were introduced into communities by Christian missionaries in their colonial and postmodern proselytizing efforts in Africa, as well as in new world plantation colonies where African slaves were settled, as in Brazil. These initiatives brought with them a sense of socio-religious community.[20]

Some practices are unique to Africa. Various denominations of Christianity in Africa have adopted regional novena practices that include devotional prayers, singing, and offerings with clapping, waving, or shouting. The novena devotion in Ghana includes the blood covering of Jesus after the loud prayers on each of the nine nights, with devotees staining themselves as they see it as a symbol of the blood of Christ.[21]

In West African coastal Christian communities, the novena is a means of asking God through worship and fasting along with traditional rituals.[22] Syncretistic New Age religious practices in Nigeria have adopted the nine-day novena prayer ritual.[23] In Zimbabwe, according to Lawrence Daka – a professor and Zimbabwean Jesuit,

Some of the strong-willed Catholics have taken up novena after novena to seek divine intervention in the face of illness or calamity. In short, there is a great longing and thirst for a religion that will provide quick answers to people’s problems, ranging from adversity to how to deal with sickness and death. Europe and North America[edit]

Devotional and paraliturgical novenas were common in Europe and among European settlers in North America. This included public services such as masses and private prayers using religious objects such as a rosary and images particularly relating to the Virgin Mary. According to James M. O’Toole, a professor specializing in American Catholic history, the period between World War I and the mid-1950s was “the heyday of American Catholic devotion”. This period witnessed the novena devotion, along with the popularity of sodalities, brotherhoods, devotion to saints, fleshless Fridays, holy cards, rosary, cross, and Eucharistic practices.[26] O’Toole says these provided a sense of community identification, especially at a time of mass migration. The novena had strong roots in ethnic neighborhoods, and devotional services had socio-political connections and conveyed a sense of communal security through religious symbolism in a time of uncertainty and fear. As economic prosperity and a sense of national solidarity increased in and after the 1960s, the novena ritual declined and church attendance declined.[28]

Novena practices continue in Eastern and Central Europe. During the communist era, the devout Orthodox Christians in the former Yugoslavia organized the Great Novena under the statue of the Virgin Mary to resist state-enforced atheism, preserve freedom of worship and reassert the Christian heritage of the region, particularly in Croatia. [29]

In Catholic Ireland, according to Professor Gladys Ganiel, devotional practices such as novenas were popular. Cultural acceptance of devotional worship has historically been high, and the Irish, who do not perform novenas themselves, nonetheless respect those who do. Some of their Catholic ritual practices were repressed by the British state in the 18th and 19th centuries, but repression and criticism only increased the Irish’s determination to hold on to their way of worship.[30]

A survey published in the Bulletin of the University of Notre Dame in 1921 states that novena prayers were popular and particularly common among students during exams, when ill, or after the death of a fellow student.[31] The novena seance remains popular in many regions of the United States, such as among Catholics in Louisiana, where novenas are dedicated to Saint Jude and the Virgin Mary. These novenas are prayers that are believed to establish contact between the saint and the devotee, thereby evoking divine intervention in any problem or anguish of concern to the devotee.[32]

Latin America[ edit ]

The novena was an important part of Christianity in the Caribbean and Latin America, both among the native Amerindian communities who converted to Christianity under Spanish or Portuguese colonial rule, and among the various communities that were newly formed from millions of slaves and indentured workers brought to America from various parts of Africa and Asia. The devotional prayers are dedicated to statues of Jesus Christ, Madonna and various saints. They are also part of velorio (awakening) after someone’s death, which involves nine nights of novenas (rezos de los nueve días).[33][34][35]

According to Patrick Taylor and Frederick Case, attendance at Christian services was low except after the death of a loved one or prominent sociopolitical figure and during difficult times such as epidemics or drought.[36][37] Many worship with rosaries in their homes before images of Christ and the Christian saints at a small consecrated altar in their living quarters.[37] Like proselytism in Africa and Asia, missionaries of various denominations of Christianity, including Protestantism, have advocated novenas in Hispanic and Latin American communities as part of their efforts to attract new converts to their ministries.[38]

Colombians celebrate a novena known as the Novena of the Aguinaldos for the nine days leading up to Christmas.

Novena are still a common sight in India, especially in the state of Kerala. They are practiced by Roman Catholics and Oriental Catholics (e.g. Syro-Malabar Christians and Syro-Malankara Christians) and by the Orthodox Christians (Malankara Orthodox Christians and Jacobite Orthodox Christians). Novena are common to Mother Mary (recited every Saturday), Saint George (common to the Orthodox and recited every Wednesday), Saint Jude (recited every Thursday), and others.

In Christian communities in the Philippines and Latin America, novena traditions include devotional rituals before a nine-tiered altar with the Holy Cross placed at the top.[39] These are lit with candles, decorated with flowers and other ritual objects. In addition, the space may be decorated with many statues, and these statues typically include those of the Virgin Mary, apostles, and saints of regional importance. On the first day the votive candles are placed at level one and with each day the candles are increased by one level towards the Holy Cross. In addition, each day includes community prayers, hymn singing with music, private and public prayers. Some novenas include congregational feasting, sometimes on the last day, over drinks, refreshments, or processions.

The novena is also associated with funeral rituals. Among Filipino Catholics, the novena of the rosary is a common practice, during which the prayer is recited for nine days, often beginning on the anniversary of a person’s death, and formal funeral services are held at any time up to the ninth day.[8] Elsewhere, the day of burial and burial is timed according to local custom, while the novena continues at the deceased’s home or elsewhere.[41] Novena remains a popular devotional practice in the Philippines.[42] It is observed, for example, in Simbang Gabi just before Christmas. The tradition of the Parol lanterns is also associated with the Christmas Novena procession and the accompanying Panunulúyan pageant. In Pampanga, Christmas novenas were known as lubenas or lubenas pascu.

It is also celebrated in the novena before the Feast of Santo Niño de Cebú (Holy Child) on the third Sunday of January. The first nine days are marked by prayers, supplications and singing.[45] During the main procession in Cebu City, the Santo Niño image is carried through the streets, with many people carrying their own replicas, decorated to their own liking.[45] In Loboc, Bohol, the most popular novena is dedicated to a statue of the Black Madonna, with each service called Gozos, which includes hymns of praise in Spanish and Visayas to the Virgin, dancing, choral concerts, and a feast with fireworks on the final day.[46]

In Metro Manila, the last three days of the workweek are assigned popular novenas to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Saint Jude Thaddeus, and the Black Nazarene.[47] Each novena is associated with a specific sanctuary, all of which have been approved by the Holy See. Some organizations have also started offering the novena rituals online for devotees.[48]

The novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help is celebrated on nine consecutive Wednesdays in Baclaran. The Thursday Saint Jude novena invokes the apostle’s status as patron of the lost cause and is popular with students taking exams.[49] The Friday novena of the Black Nazarenes marks the way of Christ with the cross up to his crucifixion. The image, the novena, and the devotional practices associated with it have a large following. In 2011, over six million Catholics flocked to the Black Nazarene procession in Manila alone.[50]

Melanesia[ edit ]

In 19th-century Melanesia, Christian clergy linked the end of epidemics such as the measles of 1860 and attributed the survival of communities after great disasters to the devotional and grand outburst of prayers for Christian icons, a “fervent novena”.[ 51] In similarly, the novenas of the Black Madonna began in Luboc after Christian clergy similarly credited the island community for surviving after a severe cholera epidemic because they performed devotional prayers to the Virgin Mary (Madonna) during their time of suffering.[46]

Mary, Untier of Knots or Mary, Untier of Knots is the name of both a Marian devotion and a baroque painting (German: pilgrimage picture or grace picture) depicting this devotion. The painting by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner, circa 1700, is in the Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Peter am Perlach, also called the Perlachkirche, in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Devotion to the image was limited to certain Latin American countries (e.g. Argentina, Brazil) but became known worldwide after the election of Pope Francis.

Executed in the Baroque style by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner (1625-1707), the painting shows the Blessed Virgin Mary standing on the crescent moon (the usual depiction of Mary under her title Immaculate Conception), surrounded by angels and holding the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, who hovers above her circle of stars while untying knots from a long ribbon while placing her foot on the head of a “knotted” snake. The serpent represents the devil, and her association with him fulfills the prophecy in Genesis 3:15: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and your seed and her seed; she will bruise your head, and you will lie in wait for her heel.”[1]

The concept of Mary untying knots comes from a work by St. Irenaeus of Lyon, Adversus haereses (Against Heresies). In Book III, Chapter 22, he presents a parallel between Eve and Mary and describes how “the knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary. For what the virgin Eve bound through unbelief, the virgin Mary released through faith.”[3]

The two small figures were also interpreted as depicting Wolfgang Langenmantel, the benefactor’s grandfather, who in his distress was led by a guardian angel to Father Jakob Rem in Ingolstadt.[2]

The painting was donated around 1700 by Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel (1641-1718), canon of the monastery of St. Peter in Augsburg. The donation is said to be related to an event in his family. His grandfather Wolfgang Langenmantel (1586-1637) was about to separate from his wife Sophia Rentz (1590-1649) and therefore sought help from Jakob Rem, the Jesuit priest in Ingolstadt. Father Rem prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary and said: “In this religious act I raise the bond of marriage, untie all knots and straighten it “. Immediately peace was restored between husband and wife, and the separation did not take place. In memory of this event commissioned her grandson to paint the Beast of Knots.

The first chapel named “Maria, Knotsolver” was completed in 1989 in Styria, Austria, inspired in response to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.[4] The image of “Mary Untying Knots” is particularly revered in Argentina and Brazil,[2] where churches are named after her and devotion to her is widespread and which the Guardian has described as “religious madness.”[5]

This devotion has become known worldwide since Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected Pope. It was believed that Father Bergoglio in Germany at the time saw the painting of Mary, Untier of Knots in Augsburg and brought a copy of the painting to Argentina; However, in an interview for the German weekly Die Zeit in 2017, Pope Francis stated that he had never been to Augsburg. A German nun sent him a Christmas card with the miraculous image, which piqued his interest.[6] Bergoglio sent his seminarians with copies of the picture to the slums of Buenos Aires, where the faithful were overwhelmed by the depiction of Mary as a knot and problem solver. He then commissioned Barbara Klimmeck, an exchange student from Eichstätt, to document the Augsburg original with all the details in order to make a copy.[7] In Buenos Aires, a copy was painted by the artist Ana de Betta Berti[8] for the Church of San José del Talar, which she has owned since December 8, 1996. On the 8th of every month, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to this church.[9]

The devotion reached Brazil towards the end of the 20th century. According to Regina Novaes of the Institute for Religious Studies in Rio de Janeiro, Mary, Untier of Knots “attracts people with small problems”.[5] Bergoglio had this image of Mary engraved in a chalice that he presented to Pope Benedict XVI. [10] and another chalice with her image, the work of the same silversmith, is to be presented to Pope Francis on behalf of the Argentine people.

Aware of Pope Francis’ special devotion to this image, a new South Korean ambassador to the Vatican in 2018, Baek Man Lee, presented him with a Korean painting of Our Lady Untying the Knots.[11]

The term commonly used to refer to these forms of prayer is the rosary, probably because of their use of the beads. Some of these rosaries have strong Marian connotations, others are more directly associated with some saints. Not all of these variants of the authentic rosary are based on solid theology and devotional practice. The following are examples of rosaries. The purpose of the crown or rosary of the Holy Face is to honor the Five Wounds of our Lord Jesus Christ and to ask of God the triumph of His Holy Church. This rosary consists of a cross and thirty-nine beads; of these six are large pearls and thirty-three are small. A medal of the Holy Face is attached to this rosary. The thirty-three beads represent the years of Jesus’ mortal life. The first thirty beads commemorate the hidden life of our Lord and are divided into five parts of six beads each, in honor of Jesus’ sense of touch, hearing, smell and taste.

Story:

Our Lady Star of the Sea is the patron saint of those who sail the seas. According to Saint Bonaventure, she is also the one who guides those who navigate the “Ship of Innocence or Penitence” on the seas of this world to a landing in heaven. Our Lady helps not only seafarers, but also those who navigate the stormy seas of life.

Method:

The prayer begins with the medal. You hold the medal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and say this prayer:

Rosary of the Immaculate Conception

The rosary consists of three groups of four beads, at the end of which is a medal of the Immaculate Conception. It was written by Saint John Berchmanns, S.J. and recited by him daily to obtain, through the intercession of Mary, the grace never to sin against the virtue of purity.

There are other rosaries dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. One of them uses an ordinary rosary (five decades), with the following exception. In place of the crucifix, this wreath bears a medal bearing the image known as the “Miraculous Medal” (1830), framed by the prayer “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who take refuge in you.” The two beads (not three) immediately before the medal invite two Ave Marias to be said. Method:

The Sign of the Cross is made five times in veneration of the Five Sacred Wounds of the Redeemer.

The small beads read: Holy Mother, save us with the flame of love of your Immaculate Heart.

The Brigittine Rosary

It consists of six decades of ten beads each. There are three additional beads at the end. The Tears of Our Lady Rosary

The Blessed Virgin Mary grants seven graces to the souls who honor her daily, saying seven Hail Marys and meditating on their tears and sorrows. The devotion was passed on by St. Bridget. These are the seven graces:

Method:

Say the Apostles’ Creed on the medal to ask for the grace of faith. Say an Our Father on each of the white beads in honor of the three divine Persons of the Most Holy Trinity in thanksgiving for all favors obtained through their intercession. On each of the red beads (there are thirteen to commemorate the thirteen years Saint Philomena spent on earth) say the following prayer:

Missionary Rosary

The Mission Rosary links two major concerns of our church: prayer and apostolate. The rosary is a traditional form of prayer which combines remembrance, praise and petition. It remembers the events of Salvation History, and is in fact the memorial of Christ’s mission. The Hail Mary as essential part of the Rosary combines praise and intercession. It praises God for the wonderful things he has done for Mary and through her. But its second half also reminds us that we are in need of God’s help and protection which we seek with Mary as intercessor. If the rosary already by itself points to apostolate and mission, this idea has been reinforced by Mary’s urging to convert and evangelize expressed in numerous apparitions. The missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word consider themselves mandated to bring this message to the whole world, especially in view of promoting peace. One of the tools they use is the mission rosary. It encourages prayers for their mission.

The colored beads symbolize the missionary efforts of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in each of the five continents. The beads of each decade of the rosary then has a distinct color:
