How to set an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification sound on Android

Are you looking for a way to use a custom ringtone on your Android phone or iPhone? Although both Android and iOS come with a list of ringtones that you can set by default for all your contacts or a specific contact, you might want to use a different melody on your phone. Custom ringtones are also worth considering if you want your favorite song or melody to be played when someone calls you. Additionally, setting a custom ringtone gives your phone a personal touch that will help you set it apart and make it easily recognizable when you’re in a large crowd.

In this article, we describe the steps you can follow to use a custom ringtone on your Android phone or iPhone.

How to Use a Custom Ringtone on Android The process of using a custom ringtone on Android is relatively easier compared to iPhone. However, before we get into the details, it’s important to note that there are slight differences in the steps depending on the Android device – considering there are various custom interfaces available in the market. We’re using the standard Android experience here as a reference for details on how to use a custom ringtone. You have to follow more or less the same steps on your device. Select the audio file in .MP3 format that you want to set as custom ringtone and put it in the ringtones folder of your Android phone. You can do this via a PC or via a file manager app on your device. Once the audio is in the correct folder, go to Settings > Sound & Vibration > Phone Ringtone. Tap on the My Sounds option and then select the audio file that you want to set as a custom ringtone. Press the plus button (+) and then tap Save.

Ringtones typically play for 30-45 seconds. Therefore, you may need to trim your audio file. There are some special apps available through Google Play that you can use to cut your favorite song or melody into a ringtone. Alternatively, you can use any audio editor like Audacity on your PC to trim the audio.

How to add a custom ringtone on iPhone using Finder

If you’re using macOS Big Sur or later, you can easily transfer the ringtone to your phone using Finder. The ringtone must be in .m4r format and no longer than 30 seconds. If you need to edit the file first or convert the format, the next section has steps you can follow. If you have a suitable audio file, the steps are very simple. Here’s what you need to do after you have the .m4r audio file for your ringtone.

Connect your iPhone to your computer. On your Mac, open the Finder. Drag and drop the ringtone onto your device.

How to Add a Custom Ringtone on iPhone Using iTunes

Apple’s iTunes also offers users the ability to create custom ringtones for the iPhone. Here are the steps you need to follow when using iTunes on Windows PC or Mac.

Open iTunes and add the song you want to use as a ringtone to your music library. Connect your iPhone to your computer and click the iPhone button next to the drop-down menu on the top bar. On the “Summary” page, scroll down to the “Options” section and click on the “Manually manage music and videos” option. Click the Done button and then click Apply. Go back to your music library in iTunes and then select the song you want to convert as a ringtone. Right-click the song title and select Song Info, then go to the Options tab. Click the start and stop checkboxes and select the start and stop points of your audio. Make sure the total audio length you choose is 30 seconds, because beyond that you won’t hear your song as a ringtone. Now select OK. Select the song and then go to File > Convert > Create AAC Version. Right-click the song and select View in Windows Explorer. Now rename the file extension of your converted audio from its existing m4a to .m4r. You can only rename the extension if the filename extensions are visible on your PC. You can enable them by clicking the View > Filename Extensions option in Windows Explorer. Copy the .m4r audio file and go back to iTunes again. Go to Devices and then your iPhone in the left sidebar. Now right click on the Sounds option and paste it. Your custom ringtone is now available on your iPhone.

These steps only work with Windows PCs and Mac computers running macOS Mojave and earlier. On newer macOS versions, the Finder serves as an alternative to iTunes for syncing music and other media content.

How to Use a Custom Ringtone on iPhone

If you don’t have access to a desktop, or want to create a custom ringtone directly from your iPhone without third-party apps, or connect your iPhone to a PC or Mac, here are the steps for you.

Download the audio file that you want to set as a custom ringtone to your iPhone. It can be in the commonly available .MP3 format. Download GarageBand from the App Store now. Open GarageBand and scroll from right to left to select the Sound Recorder option. When prompted to record audio, tap OK, then select the third icon in the top-right corner. Now make sure the metronome is disabled. It is available right after the record button on the top. Tap the Loops icon in the top-left corner, then switch to the Files tab from the top. You can now browse items in the Files app. You need to select the audio app that you want to use as a custom ringtone. Alternatively, you can also select a song that is stored locally in your music library. However, you cannot select a song or podcast that is available through Apple Music. Once the song is selected, it will appear on the Loops screen. Drag and drop it onto your timeline in GarageBand’s Audio Recorder. Tap the plus sign (+) above the timeline – far right. This allows you to change the section length. You need to manually change the segment length to 30 bars because ringtones usually play for 30 seconds. Now adjust the song by trimming and dragging the clip with your finger. You can also play the final audio from the top panel. Tap the arrow icon in the top left corner. You see your GarageBand project. You can rename the project with any name for your custom ringtone. Now tap and hold the project and select Share. You will then see a “Share Song” screen where you need to select “Ringtone” and then tap “Next” to export your final audio as a ringtone. You can also rename the ringtone before exporting it as a ringtone from the app. Once the audio is created, you can use it as a custom ringtone by tapping the Use sound as… option in a popup that appears after the export is successful. You can also do this by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.

If you don’t want to use GarageBand on your iPhone, you can export your songs as custom ringtones using iTunes on a Windows PC or Mac, or sync them to Mac computers running recent versions of macOS using the Finder.

How to set an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification sound on Android

There are many websites that offer ringtone downloads. However, mobile users run the risk of contracting a trojan or virus when downloading ringtones online. In addition, it comes with other serious risks: hidden charges when downloading a ringtone and the possibility of your credit card information being hacked by fraudulent individuals.

These websites that require your credit card information should not be trusted so easily to avoid having your credit card information stolen. Although there are reputable websites that offer free ringtone downloads, these ringtones are usually just single tones. Also, mobile users’ choices on these sites are very limited.

Mobile users have other options to download ringtones. Firstly, they can do this using the Wireless Application Protocol or their mobile phone’s WAP function. The WAP function was developed to bring convenience to mobile users. With just a few taps of a finger, a mobile user can surf the web.

A mobile phone user is usually billed per connection time to the WAP Internet. It’s more expensive than searching for a ringtone over wired or wireless internet connections. Surfing and downloading speeds are also slower. The convenience of mobile internet, on the other hand, should not be ignored. In addition to free browsing, protection against virus and Trojan horse attacks is also offered when calling up the mobile phone provider’s website.

Second, cell phone users also have the option to download ringtones directly from cell phone providers’ kiosks. Mobile kiosks are available in wireless centers for use by mobile users. These kiosks don’t just offer ringtone downloads; Wallpapers, themes, and other services can be accessed from these standalone customer service engines. If mobile users are clueless about a particular service, a customer service representative is on hand to help and explain the service.

Mobile users can also download ring tones from other mobile users via the wireless infrared or Bluetooth connection. The infrared wireless connection has a shorter range compared to Bluetooth. In addition, infrared requires the necessary alignment of the source mobile phone to the recipient mobile phone for the transmission. Bluetooth, on the other hand, is a newer technology with a longer range and no alignment required.

As newer features and capabilities of mobile phones are introduced, we can be sure that we have more convenience in store for mobile users. But even as technology becomes more advanced, trojans, viruses and hacker attacks will never go away. Even though there are many options for mobile users to download ringtones online, extra caution should always be exercised.

How to make a custom ringtone on Android

Android has a way of creating custom ringtones built right into its operating system. Since Android 9.0 Pie it’s possible to download something special to make this work. All you need is a song or audio file on your device. For this tutorial we are using the Google Pixel 5 running on Android 12.

Once you have saved your file on your phone, go to Settings and then Sound & Vibration. Tap Phone ringtone > My sounds, then click the + icon at the bottom right of the screen to add a new ringtone to your list of default options.

You can choose between songs, artists, albums, genres or a track from a folder. By browsing the Files tab, you can even search for audio files in cloud storage. After you add a ringtone, it will appear in your list of tones. Simply select and your new ringtone is already set. The example shown above is an MP3 track named Prince Johnny of St. Vincent.

Create custom ringtones with a third-party app

There are several apps on the Play Store that can do this, but for this tutorial we’ll be using an open source app called MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker. The good thing about this app is that it doesn’t bombard you with ads from the start, only when you want to access select features. Removing the ads and unlocking all premium features (all songs, etc.) costs a one-time fee of $3.99.

In-app purchases are required to access additional features, but the bare basics are good enough for the average Android user who wants nothing more than to excise a select segment from their favorite MP3 track. With this app you can use any sound or song you have on your phone as a ringtone. After creating your ringtone, you can set it as the default tone or assign it to a specific contact. Besides ringtones, the app can also create custom alarms and notification tones.

Started

First things first, you need to install the free app MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker from Google Play Store. To turn a song into a ringtone, you must also have the audio files or music you want to use on your smartphone’s internal memory or its microSD card. MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker is compatible with MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC audio files, among others.

Launch the MP3 Cutter & Ringtone Maker app on your Android phone. Once the app launches, you’ll see a list of options from trending TikTok songs to Hindi Bollywood – whatever floats your boat! However, if you have an audio track on your smartphone that you want to edit, you can choose MP3 Cutter. Select the song you want to use as a ringtone from the list. Once you’ve selected a song, its waveform will open in the editor. Use the two sliders above and below the chart to choose a start and end point for your ringtone. Finally, save the sound clip by selecting Save. You can rename it if you want and specify what kind of notification you want to use it for (the default option is ringtone).

How to set an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification sound on Android

You can turn your Mac or PC into your own ringtone maker and create custom ringtones for your iPhone from almost any MP3 file. With Apple’s free iTunes software, you can edit an MP3 file and convert it into an iTunes ringtone for iPhone. Although there are several steps involved that require some attention to detail, the process is fairly quick.

Launch the iTunes app

Launch iTunes on your Mac or Windows computer. In order to create a ringtone, you don’t need to connect to your iTunes Store account because you’re working with an MP3 file that’s on your own hard drive.

Add the MP3 to iTunes

If your MP3 file isn’t already in your iTunes library, you’ll need to add it. Click on the “File” menu and select “Add to Library…”. Locate the MP3 file in the File Open dialog box, select the track and click the Open button to import the MP3 file to iTunes.

Trim the file

In iTunes, under Library, click Songs. Right click on the MP3 file in the list of songs; iTunes displays a list of properties and actions. Choose Song Info and click Options. Check the boxes for start and stop times. Set the start time to the point in the file where you want the ringtone to begin; For example, if you only want a snippet of a song as a ringtone, listen to the MP3 file and determine when the snippet begins and ends. Set the stop time to the point where you want the ringtone to end. Note that the stop time cannot be more than 30 seconds after the start time; 30 seconds is the maximum ring time for iPhone. When you have set the start and stop times, click OK.

Convert the MP3 file

Click the File menu. Choose “Convert”. A list of options is displayed. Select “Create AAC version”. iTunes creates a new entry in the music library of the same track; this file is not MP3 but in Apple’s AAC format. Select “Song Info” and click “Options” again for your MP3 file. Uncheck the boxes next to the start and stop times for the file, then click OK, otherwise iTunes will only play that short portion of the song.

Rename the file

In iTunes, highlight the new file’s name, right-click and choose Reveal in Finder. On a Windows computer, the equivalent option is “Show in Windows Explorer”. Change the file extension (the last 3 characters of the filename after the period) from “m4a” to the file type “m4r”. Leave the Finder/Explorer window open for now.

Connect the iPhone

Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable. The iPhone should appear under “Devices” in iTunes. Below the iPhone, you should see a series of icons, including a bell that represents the phone’s ringtones. Click the bell icon to open a custom ringtone window.

Copy the file

Click on the Finder/Explorer window, select your newly created file and drag it into the ringtone window. The file should appear in the iTunes list under Tones and automatically sync to your iPhone.

Check the ringtone

Legal music purchases these days seem to revolve around subscription services like Apple Music or Spotify, but there are still plenty of reasons to have lots of MP3 or AAC files lying around on your hard drive. Maybe you downloaded them from Bandcamp. Perhaps you own CDs and have ripped them yourself. Maybe you converted an old bootleg recording. Maybe they “fell off the truck”.

Whatever the reason, you have an MP3 or AAC audio file that you want to listen to on your iPhone or iPad, you need to get it there first. Here’s how you do it.

Before you begin, here’s what you need.

A Mac or PC with the MP3 or AAC file and the latest version of iTunes installed.

A USB Lightning cable to connect to your iPhone or iPad, or an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription.

Adding the file(s) to your iTunes library

Before adding the MP3 or AAC file to your iOS device, you need to add it to your iTunes music library. Luckily, it’s incredibly easy.

1. Launch iTunes.

2. Go to the Music section (top left) and then select Library (top top).

Navigate to the Music section of your iTunes library.

3. Drag the MP3 or AAC files you want to sync from the Finder (or Explorer in Windows) into your music library.

Drag your MP3 or AAC file into iTunes.

That’s it! You should see music across all of your iTunes music lists: Artists, Albums, Songs, and Genres. You can now play these tracks in iTunes on computer.

Sync music to your iPhone or iPad

The easiest way to move the music to your iOS devices is using your iCloud music library. If you have Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can store 100,000 of your own songs in the cloud and access them from any device signed in with the same Apple ID.

1. Make sure iCloud Music Library is enabled. Open the Preferences menu: It’s in the menu bar under iTunes on a Mac or Edit on a PC.

Make sure iCloud Music Library is enabled in iTunes.

2. On the General tab, ensure that iCloud Music Library is enabled for your Apple ID.

3. Right-click (or ctrl-click) the track you want to upload. If you are uploading multiple tracks, first select them all and then right-click.

Upload your tracks to the cloud.

4. Select Add to iCloud Music Library.

That’s all you have to do. Now when you open the Music app on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll find the tracks you’ve uploaded to your library.

If you don’t have Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can still move the tracks to your phone’s storage via USB.

1. Connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC with the USB cable and open iTunes. If necessary, enter your passcode to allow iTunes to access your iPhone or iPad.

2. Select your iPhone using the small icon in the top left.

Click on this little box to go to your iPhone sync settings.

3. On your iPhone screen, select “Music” on the left and make sure the “Sync Music” checkbox is checked. You can choose to sync all your music or just selected playlists, artists, albums or genres.

Make sure Sync Music is checked and the music you want is selected.

4. Click Apply on the bottom right to sync your music.

When your iOS device is done syncing, you should see all of your music in the Music app’s Library section.

How to set an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification sound on Android

This guide will show you how to set an MP3 file as a custom ringtone or notification sound. Let’s get straight to the point. Also: The best customization apps for Android

Note: All steps in this tutorial were compiled using a Pixel 4a with 5G running Android 12 and a custom PC running Windows 11. Note that the steps may differ depending on the hardware and software version. requirements

It doesn’t take much to set an MP3 file as a ringtone or notification tone. Technically, the only requirements are an Android phone and an MP3 file. You may need an internet connection depending on whether you have the MP3 stored locally or not. You may also need a PC and additional software to trim the audio file. Requirements: Android phone

You don’t want the whole song to play as a ringtone. Well you could, and you can skip this step if you do. However, this will not always be the case. Often you only want to hear a specific part of a song or MP3 audio. You can use various software to trim your audio files, e.g. B. Adobe Audition, Reaper and Pro Tools. However, we will only touch on a few options to simplify things; one for PC and one for Android. To trim an MP3 file using Audacity: Download, install and launch Audacity. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Go to File > Import > Audio. Select the MP3 you want to find. Use the selection tool and cursor to highlight the audio portion you want to keep as the ringtone. Once a section has been selected, you can press the spacebar to play just that part and make sure you like it. Now click Edit > Remove Content > Trim Audio. Only the selected section remains. Drag your audio to the beginning of the timeline. I would also advise using fade in and fade out at the beginning and end. These options can be accessed from the Effects menu. Now go to File > Export and select MP3. Move the file to your smartphone.

To trim an MP3 file using Music Editor: Download and install Music Editor from the Google Play Store. Use a file manager to move the MP3 file to your music folder. Start the music editor. Tap on the Trim Audio option. Choose the song you want to turn into a phone ringtone. Drag the sliders to select the part of the song you want to keep as a ringtone. The green is the beginning and the red is the end. You can use the media controls below to preview. Click the floppy disk icon in the top right. Choose a name for the new file. Click OK.
