Once you have saved your file on your phone, go to Settings and then Sound & Vibration. Tap Phone ringtone > My sounds, then click the + icon at the bottom right of the screen to add a new ringtone to your list of default options.

You can choose between songs, artists, albums, genres or a track from a folder. By browsing the Files tab, you can even search for audio files in cloud storage. You can turn your Mac or PC into your own ringtone maker and create custom ringtones for your iPhone from almost any MP3 file. With Apple’s free iTunes software, you can edit an MP3 file and convert it into an iTunes ringtone for iPhone. Although there are several steps involved that require some attention to detail, the process is fairly quick.

Launch the iTunes app

Launch iTunes on your Mac or Windows computer. In order to create a ringtone, you don’t need to connect to your iTunes Store account because you’re working with an MP3 file that’s on your own hard drive.

Add the MP3 to iTunes

If your MP3 file isn’t already in your iTunes library, you’ll need to add it. Click on the “File” menu and select “Add to Library…”. Locate the MP3 file in the File Open dialog box, select the track and click the Open button to import the MP3 file to iTunes.

Trim the file

In iTunes, under Library, click Songs. Right click on the MP3 file in the list of songs; iTunes displays a list of properties and actions. Choose Song Info and click Options. Check the boxes for start and stop times. Set the start time to the point in the file where you want the ringtone to begin; For example, if you only want a snippet of a song as a ringtone, listen to the MP3 file and determine when the snippet begins and ends. Set the stop time to the point where you want the ringtone to end. Note that the stop time cannot be more than 30 seconds after the start time; 30 seconds is the maximum ring time for iPhone. When you have set the start and stop times, click OK.

Convert the MP3 file

Click the File menu. Choose “Convert”. A list of options is displayed. Select “Create AAC version”. iTunes creates a new entry in the music library of the same track; this file is not MP3 but in Apple’s AAC format. Select “Song Info” and click “Options” again for your MP3 file. Uncheck the boxes next to the start and stop times for the file, then click OK, otherwise iTunes will only play that short portion of the song.

Rename the file

In iTunes, highlight the new file’s name, right-click and choose Reveal in Finder. On a Windows computer, the equivalent option is “Show in Windows Explorer”. Change the file extension (the last 3 characters of the filename after the period) from “m4a” to the file type “m4r”. Leave the Finder/Explorer window open for now.

Connect the iPhone

Connect your iPhone to your computer using the USB cable. The iPhone should appear under “Devices” in iTunes. Below the iPhone, you should see a series of icons, including a bell that represents the phone’s ringtones. Click the bell icon to open a custom ringtone window.

Copy the file

Click on the Finder/Explorer window, select your newly created file and drag it into the ringtone window. The file should appear in the iTunes list under Tones and automatically sync to your iPhone.

Before adding the MP3 or AAC file to your iOS device, you need to add it to your iTunes music library. Luckily, it’s incredibly easy.

1. Launch iTunes.

2. Go to the Music section (top left) and then select Library (top top).

Navigate to the Music section of your iTunes library.

3. Drag the MP3 or AAC files you want to sync from the Finder (or Explorer in Windows) into your music library.

That’s it! You should see music across all of your iTunes music lists: Artists, Albums, Songs, and Genres. You can now play these tracks in iTunes on computer.

Sync music to your iPhone or iPad

The easiest way to move the music to your iOS devices is using your iCloud music library. If you have Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can store 100,000 of your own songs in the cloud and access them from any device signed in with the same Apple ID.

1. Make sure iCloud Music Library is enabled. Open the Preferences menu: It’s in the menu bar under iTunes on a Mac or Edit on a PC.

Make sure iCloud Music Library is enabled in iTunes.

2. On the General tab, ensure that iCloud Music Library is enabled for your Apple ID.

3. Right-click (or ctrl-click) the track you want to upload. If you are uploading multiple tracks, first select them all and then right-click.

4. Select Add to iCloud Music Library.

That’s all you have to do. Now when you open the Music app on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll find the tracks you’ve uploaded to your library.

If you don’t have Apple Music or iTunes Match, you can still move the tracks to your phone’s storage via USB.

1. Connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC with the USB cable and open iTunes. If necessary, enter your passcode to allow iTunes to access your iPhone or iPad.

2. Select your iPhone using the small icon in the top left.

Click on this little box to go to your iPhone sync settings.

3. On your iPhone screen, select “Music” on the left and make sure the “Sync Music” checkbox is checked. You can choose to sync all your music or just selected playlists, artists, albums or genres.

Make sure Sync Music is checked and the music you want is selected.

4. Click Apply on the bottom right to sync your music.

When your iOS device is done syncing, you should see all of your music in the Music app’s Library section.
