This article covers several options for connecting a Chromebook to an external monitor. There aren’t as many options as there are with a Windows or Mac PC, but you can enjoy an extra monitor without much extra effort.

Connect the Chromebook to an external monitor via HDMI

If you want to connect an external monitor to your Chromebook as quickly and easily as possible and don’t mind a wired solution, an HDMI cable is the right choice.

If your Chromebook has an HDMI port (most have), you can use an HDMI cable to make that connection. The HDMI port is usually found next to USB ports on the side of the Chromebook. It’s a 6-sided port with beveled corners on the bottom. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into this port and the other end into any HDMI port on the back of the external monitor. The Chromebook often recognizes the connected monitor automatically. If it isn’t, select the lower-right corner of the Chromebook taskbar, and then select the Settings icon. From the Settings menu, select Device from the left menu, scroll down to the Device section and select View. On the Displays screen you should see all connected displays including the connected external one. Adjust settings like resolution and whether you want it to be an extended display or your primary display. If you don’t see the external display on this screen, or adjusting settings doesn’t work, you may need to troubleshoot HDMI connection issues. Remember to use your display’s menu settings to select the correct HDMI port on the back of the monitor you’ve connected your Chromebook to.

Connect the Chromebook to an external monitor via USB-C

Another wired solution available to you for connecting a Chromebook to a monitor is the USB-C port that most Chromebooks have.

The USB-C port is a very small, partially rectangular and oval port, typically on the back of the Chromebook. You can use this port to connect to an external monitor, but you will need: USB-C cable

HDMI cable Connect the USB-C port to the adapter. Then connect the HDMI cable from the adapter to the monitor. Follow the same procedure in the section above to configure the display after you connect it.

Connect an external monitor via Chromecast

If you want a wireless solution, you can connect a Chromecast device to your external monitor and then cast it with your Chromebook.

Your Chromebook is great for many tasks, but it can’t run your favorite Mac or Windows apps. Luckily, it’s easy to remotely access any Windows or Mac computer from your Chromebook and use all of its apps in one window.

To run a remote session, each connected system must have the Chrome browser and each browser must be signed in to the same Google account. After that, setup is a breeze. Just install a plugin in each computer’s Chrome browser, follow a few instructions, and you’ll be able to access your primary PC from your Chromebook, even if the Chrome browser is closed on the remote system.

Set up a computer for remote access

1. Open the Google Chrome browser on the PC or Mac that you want to access remotely from your Chromebook.

2. Open this page and click Add to Chrome.

3. Click Add App.

4. Open Chrome Remote Desktop from the Apps view.

5. Select the Google account you use on the Chromebook.

6. Select Allow to confirm that you are giving the Chrome Remote Desktop app access to several settings and features.

7. Select Next in the dialog box explaining that you need to grant advanced permissions on this PC or Mac in order to access it remotely.

8. Select “Get Started” under “My Computers”.

9. Click Enable Remote Connections.

10. Click Accept and Install. PC users, if you don’t see this window, feel free to skip to step 18.

11. Open the downloaded chromeremotedesktop.dmg file.

12. Open the Chrome Remote Desktop host.

13. Click Install.

14. Enter your password and click Install Software.

15. Click Close.

16. Click OK.

17. Click OK.

18. Enter your new PIN number twice and click OK.

19. Enter your system password and click OK.

20. In the dialog box confirming that remote access to your computer has been enabled, click OK.

The PC/MAC you are currently working on now appears in the My Computers section of the Chrome Remote Access desktop. You can change the name of the PC by clicking the pencil icon on the right.

Access a remote desktop from your Chromebook

1. Launch the Chrome Remote Desktop app from your Start menu. If the app is not installed, follow the steps above to install it.

2. Select Allow access to confirm that you are giving the Chrome Remote Desktop app access to several settings and features. Systems connected to the Remote Desktop app will now appear under My Computers.

3. Select the system you want to access remotely.

4. Enter the PIN you assigned to the computer for remote access and select Connect.

The remote computer’s desktop appears on the screen.

In the top left corner of the screen you will find the name of the system you are connected to and a menu button that opens a list of commands including CTRL + ALT + DEL and taking screenshots.

You can navigate the remote computer as if you were standing in front of it. Note that the Chrome Remote Desktop app plays audio from the remote computer on the local system. So if you want to listen to audio tracks or watch movies on the remote device and listen on your Chromebook. You can also copy and paste text between the remote and local computers.

Chromebook is a lightweight device with a small footprint of the operating system. But when I’m using professional apps like Photoshop, Microsoft Office, or Visual Studio Code on my desktop, I have little to no use from a Chromebook. But with these handy third-party apps, I can use the Chromebook as a second monitor for my primary computer. This supports my workflow and productivity with a dual monitor setup without having to buy an additional monitor.

Use Chromebook as a second monitor

1. Duet Ad

Of all the apps tested, Duet Display came out on top with its seamless and reliable connection between devices. It is a paid app with a one-time cost of $9.99. Totally worth it. You only need to purchase the app on the Chromebook, while Windows and Mac clients are free as long as you’re a paid customer. Google sometimes offers Duet Display as a bonus for purchasing a Chromebook. So before you buy, make sure you’re eligible for the offer in the Explore app on Chromebook.

Download the Duat Display app on Chromebook from the Play Store. Also, download the Windows or Mac client and install it on the system. Click on your profile and check the box next to Screen Sharing Enabled.

Open the Duet Display on the Chromebook and select Android in the left sidebar. Then select the Air option. Although Duet Display supports a wired connection, it doesn’t work with Chromebook.

If you opened the Duet display on the Chromebook, you should find your Chromebook IP address here. Click on it to connect. If it doesn’t appear, click the Manually connect to IP button and manually enter the Chromebook’s IP address.
