If your vacuum just doesn’t have the suction power, or just can’t seem to get your floors clean, then there are several things you can do to improve its performance. None of these tips will take more than a few minutes and some basic tools.

Clog it

First and foremost, look for clogs in your hoses and unclog them with these tips. Next, you should empty the bag or cup regularly. Any amount of dirt and lint in your vacuum’s cup or bag can affect its performance, so empty the cup each time you vacuum and empty the bag when it is no more than two-thirds full.

Check the brush

The rotating socket at the base of the vacuum cleaner is called an impact brush. This brush essentially combs lint, threads and hair out of carpets. A small malfunction in the brush and your floors can remain dirty no matter how often you vacuum.

Thread and hair can become tangled around the brush, making the bristles less effective. In extreme cases, entangled hair and threads can even prevent the brush from turning or block the suction power. Turn your vacuum upside down about once a week and take a good look at the brush. If dirt has wrapped around it, use a sharp knife or scissors to cut it away.

Also check the height of the brush. The brush height should be adjusted for the type of floor you are cleaning. Shaggy carpets require the highest brush setting, while smooth floors and low-pile carpets require the lowest setting to properly clean the floor. Using the lowest setting on a medium to deep pile carpet will wear out the brush unnecessarily. On the other hand, if you’re using a high setting on a bare floor, chances are the brush’s bristles aren’t making contact with the floor and won’t do you much good.

After a year or so, you may need to replace your vacuum cleaner’s impact brush. If the bristles appear bruised, broken, or of different heights, it’s time to replace the brush. You can find these online with the vacuum cleaner brand and model of your vacuum cleaner.

To remove the impact brush:

Remove the plate holding the brush. Some models have clips that hold the panel in place, while others have screws that need to be removed. Grasp the bar on both sides and lift. The rod should protrude from a slot at each end. Slide the brush out of the rubber band.

To insert the new brush, simply slide the strap around the strap slot on the brush (a groove the width of the strap usually found in the middle or on one side of the brush), slide the brush ends into the slot each side of the opening and replace the panel.

Replace the drive belt

While you have your vacuum upside down, take a look at the strap that wraps around the whipping brush. This is called a drive belt. If it is not stretched taut or appears to have cracks or tears, you will need to replace it. This belt rotates the beater brush. If it doesn’t work properly, the impact brush won’t clean properly.

Replace the filters

Most vacuum cleaners come with a removable HEPA filter, which is an accordion-style paper filter. They also come with a spongy ring filter. Some vacuum cleaner models come with washable filters, while others require filters to be changed. These filters reduce suction power when dirty, so they should be changed or cleaned regularly.

Your owner’s manual should tell you what type of filters you have, how to remove them, and when to change them. However, if the filter looks dirty, you should probably swap it out for a new one or clean it, as change times can vary depending on how often you vacuum and how dirty your floors are.

The spongy filter and washable filter can be hand washed if you feel they get a little dirty. Remove the filter and wash it with warm water and a drop of dish soap. Make sure to rinse it well and let it air dry completely before putting it back in the vacuum.

Once everything is clean and working properly, your vacuum should work like new.

Some manufacturers offer extended warranties depending on the model, with brands like Dyson offering 5-year warranties.

Although the warranty offers a replacement for any defective device, it’s important to note that things like accidental damage or wear and tear aren’t covered. In these circumstances, you have no choice but to buy a new vacuum cleaner.

In general, we recommend replacing a vacuum cleaner when the repair costs are more than half of the original cost of the machine. If you bought a vacuum for $250, we recommend repairs under $125. Of course, if you really like your vacuum cleaner or it’s out of production, you can decide that if it’s worth more than that, it’s still worth fixing.

If your machine is running slow or falling apart, we may not recommend a repair. Machines cannot always be effectively cleaned of strong odors.

However, the appearance of a machine is not always an indication that it is worth repairing. We see many machines that go better with the walls than the original color! A durable machine will last years beyond its beauty.

parts availability

Another important thing to consider is the availability of parts and accessories for your machine. On an older machine, parts may be hard to come by. Bags and straps are usually available for many decades (especially on popular machines like the Kirby), but brushrolls and filters are sometimes only available for a limited time after the machine is manufactured.

If your device is poorly supported by the manufacturer, there is no guarantee as to how long you can use (and repair) it. Belts and brushrolls are consumable items, so if they’re not available, consider a new vacuum.

Finally, you have to consider how much you like the machine. Is it a machine you’ve had for twenty years and enjoy using? You can consider fixing it even if it is 3/4 the purchase value. Is it heavy and heavy to carry up the stairs? It may be worth replacing your machine with a lighter one.

This part is more important when repairing older sewing machines. Sewing machines are used a lot, which means that the components wear out over time. Although many wearing parts can be replaced or even repaired, we do not always recommend this. Repairs sometimes get a machine working properly, but not perfectly – everyone has certain preferences and expectations from a machine! For example, machines with a worn needle bar may still work, but they may not work very well on certain stretch fabrics.

This is the most important thing to consider before repairing your machine. If you want to sew boat covers on your machine, but the machine is made entirely of plastic, we do not recommend repairing it. Many modern machines just aren’t capable of sewing heavy fabrics – which means you’ll be coming back for a repair every few months.

If you want to sew heavy materials, we recommend replacing a cheap machine with an older, steel-geared or near-industrial machine. Don’t be fooled by machines labeled “Heavy Duty” – if they have a plastic body, they won’t go through heavy fabrics more than once.

If you have an older sewing machine — especially one with steel gears — we almost always recommend repairing it. Over time, these machines have become increasingly difficult to find. However, these machines sew almost anything with very little trouble.

Sewing machines are investments

You will find that we often recommend optimizing your machine once a year. If you do, the total investment in repairs could potentially exceed the machine’s original value – don’t let that put you off! Think of your sewing machine like a car – you take it to the shop every now and then to make sure it runs well and lasts a long time. A good sewing machine is an investment and you should treat it as one. Over time, it becomes increasingly difficult to find quality sewing machines that are easy to learn. Replacing your sewing machine with a new one involves learning and adjusting new settings. Every machine is slightly different – even within the same model.

They can also work their way into the bearings, causing them to seize and in some cases melt the nozzle housing, permanently destroying the vacuum. Replace the vacuum bag when it’s full If your vacuum doesn’t come with a “full” indicator, monitor its performance as you go. Typically, a vacuum bag needs to be replaced when it is 70-80% full. Keep the vacuum cleaner filters clean If you have a bagless vacuum like a Dyson or Shark, cleaning your filters frequently is essential to the health and longevity of the device. If they are washable… every 3 months is the average for most users when this should be done. Some filters need to be replaced. Heavy use every 6 months, pet owners every year and light use every 2-3 years is recommended. Keep an eye on your vacuum’s performance When it’s not vacuuming, smelling, smoking, spitting stuff out… Stop and find out the problem. We often see burned out vacuum motors because machines continue to run long after they become clogged. Clogs stop airflow and overheat vacuum motors. A small thing like a hairpin can cause a clog and even destroy a new vacuum if not equipped with safety shutoffs. Correct nozzle height Vacuum cleaners work without air flow. If the nozzle is buried in the carpet on the lowest setting, you will not have airflow and in turn will likely damage your carpet. If your vacuum has height adjustment, raise it up and then lower it to the point where you can hear the bristles touching the carpet pile. Once you get there, don’t go any lower. Need to test or troubleshoot a vacuum motor or even a relay or circuit brush? Here are the necessary steps.

Allow the vacuum to cool down by leaving it idle and off and unplugging it from the outlet. Wait at least 30 minutes for the thermal circuit breaker to reset itself. Some vacuum cleaner brands may take longer to reset than others. Be sure to remove the plug, otherwise the circuit breaker reset will not complete. Try the vacuum again.

The most common cause of loss of suction is clogged filters. They may need to be cleaned or replaced. Another cause could be that the vacuum hose is clogged.

First unplug the vacuum cleaner.

Remove all filters and clean them all according to the user manual. (Some are washable and some just need brushing or beating very gently).

Remove the hose and check if the tube is clogged.

Tip: If the hose sucks but not the main base, the base connecting tube may be clogged or the hammer bar may not rotate. Check the bottom of the vacuum for clogs and make sure the belts are not broken. Please refer to your owner’s manual for details on how to check the belts.

The dust canister of bagless vacuums needs to be emptied regularly to maintain maximum suction power (the dust canisters usually have a filter inside that can catch dirt build-up).

For bagged models, check that the bag is not full.

Strange noises from the vacuum

Your vacuum can literally scream for help. Blocked vacuum filters

Just like the filters in your oven or in your car’s air conditioning system, vacuum filters need to be changed from time to time. Most filters don’t need to be changed too often; Pros recommend changing the filter every six vacuum bag changes or so.

How long do vacuum cleaners last?

This is a question that gets asked a lot. Is it worth spending more than £45 to repair a three year old vacuum cleaner when a new one costs less than £100?

Well that depends. For example, if you have 10 vacuum cleaners that break down and they cost an average of £45 to repair, you’d still save around £500.

In this blog we will look at the most common causes of vacuum cleaner failures and give an approximate repair cost. (We test and repair thousands of vacuum cleaners every year)

Some Common Problems

1/ Cable or connector repair

This is by far the most common cause of vacuum cleaner malfunctions. Often only the cable has been torn out of the connection blocks inside the machine housing.

The cost of the repair will vary depending on whether it’s just a simple rewire and subsequent PA test, or whether a new cable is needed.

The repair costs between 15 and 20 euros. Definitely worth it.

2/ Switch replacement

This is also very common and depends on the machine brand, but it’s usually worth doing.

3/ Machine blocked

Yes, that’s not true, a blocked vacuum. You wouldn’t believe the number of machines we’ve sent back for repair, the engine overheating and failing, the inspection we find burst bags (sometimes full to the brim) and clogged filters.

Sometimes just block hoses.

Is it worth sending in for repairs? No, of course not, unclog yourself and clean the filter with another vacuum cleaner.

4/ Vacuum motor needs to be replaced

This may only be worn due to age or because it has been abused. B. Water sucked up in the motor or normal running of the machine in the blocked state.

It’s almost never worth it. The cost of a halfway decent motor and installation is close to the cost of a new machine.
