  They have another restaurant in Fort lee, which is always crowded. so I assume they decided to open up another one nearby.

  Food is just as good as the Fort Lee location, but the service here is much better.

  Tried today for lunch the ‘Assorted sashimi special for 2’ ($139 – pretty good value considering how much food you get). Along with the very fresh sashimi, you get many cooked dishes (so full, wound up taking home the last course, maeuntang – spicy seafood soup.)

한국식 활어회라면 바로 이곳: 바다이야기 (잉글우드 클립스)

겨울이다. 어김없이 김이 모락모락 나는 뜨거운 국물이 그리울 시간이다. 동시에 한국에 있다면 회 한 접시와 함께 하는 여러 가지 낭만을 꿈꾸는 시간이겠지만, 미국에서는 그게 녹녹지 많은 않다.

물론 활어회는 아니지만, 다양한 초밥집이 주변 있지만, 이곳에서 먹는 회는 외이리 다른지… 활어회만의 쫀득함과, 한국식 회의 다양한 반찬과 곁들임 상은 이길 수는 없을 것이다. 그렇다고 활어회를 잘못 먹으면 수백 달러는 없어져 버리니 정말 맘 놓고 고르기도 어렵다.

미국에서 한인이 다섯 손가락 안에 들 정도로 많은 뉴욕, 뉴저지이지만, 활어회만큼은 접근이 어려운 업종은 아닐까? 5년 전, 처음 포트리에서 맛본 바다이야기는 가장 한국적인 회를 보여주는 식당이었다. 그리고 3년 전 바다이야기 2호점이 잉글우드 클립스에 생겨났을 때 이곳을 안 가보고는 견딜 수 없었고, 이제는 뉴저지에서 활어회를 먹고 싶다면 가장 먼저 생각 나는 곳으로 바뀌었다.

먼저 포트리의 바다이야기는 나중에 이야기하도록 하자. 여전히 맛있는 집이고, 정겨운 곳이지만, 2호점이 보여주는 압도하는 모습은 아니기 때문이다. 2호점은 뉴욕과 뉴저지를 잇는 조지 워싱턴 브릿지를 건너 잉글우드 클립스 쪽인 북쪽으로 약 5분 정도 이동하면 만날 수 있는 곳이다. 인근에 LG 미주 지사를 비롯해 다양한 한국 회사들이 즐비해 있어서 일까? 이곳은 시작과 함께 성공한 식당이라고 해야겠다.

사실 이전에는 멕시칸 식당이었고, 유치원이었던 건물 탓일까? 횟집과는 어울리지 않는 약간은 낯선 외관이다. 그러나 멕시칸식 건축물이 한국의 기와와 맞닿아 있는 것이 많아서 일까? 그리 큰 이질감이 들지는 않는다. 처음 들어선 레스토랑의 인상은 넓고 깔끔하다는 인상이다. 정면에는 초밥 바를 두고 있으나 운영하지는 않은 듯하고, 양쪽에 2층으로 올라가는 계단이 크게 있으며 샹들리에가 있는 것이 웅장하다는 느낌을 준다. 동시에 2층에도 작은 바와 함께 서빙을 하고 있어 층이 구분되는 것도 좋다.

최근에는 코로나 이후에 넓은 장소에서 식사를 하길 원하는 고객들이 늘어서 일까? 각 테이블에도 칸막이가 잘 되어 있었다.

사실 이곳은 굳이 회를 먹지 않아도 찾을 만한 곳이다. 점심 특선으로 나오는 도시락류는 회나 스시와 함께 우동과 튀김을 곁들일 수 있는데 그 역시 수준급이다. 비록 지금은 재료값 상승 등을 이유로 20달러가 넘어가지만, 처음에는 단돈 15달러에 회와 초밥, 그리고 우동에 튀김까지 모두 맛볼 수 있는 환상적인 메뉴였다.

회도 사실 알고 보면 부담스럽지는 않다. 개인적으로 확인해 보지는 않았지만, 매주 한국에서 비행기로 활어회를 공수하고 있다고 광고하는 것을 보면, 광어를 비롯한 일부 횟감은 한국에서 오는 것이 확실할 것이다.

전반적으로 2인 상을 기준으로 150달러 정도, 3-4인 상을 기준으로 한다면 250달러 내외, 6인 상 정도면 3-400 달러 정도라고 생각하면 된다. 물론 팁과 세금은 별도이니 그것도 고려해야 한다.

하지만, 대부분의 활어회 메뉴에서 산 낙지나, 굴, 튀김, 회무침 등등 다양한 사이드 메뉴가 제공되는 것과 함께 회를 먹고 나면 지리나 매운탕을 선택해 먹을 수 있다는 점을 감안한다면 절대 나쁜 조건은 아니다.

만일 작은 모임의 장소를 원한다면 이곳만 한 곳도 없다. 2층에는 따로 분리된 방이 있는데 8인 정도부터 예약을 받는다. 물론 특정 음식을 반드시 주문해야 하는 번거로움이 있지만, 횟집에 와서 그 정도는 뭐 당연하다 싶다.

만일 처음 이곳을 방문한다면 단품 메뉴를 먼저 즐기기를 권한다. 다양한 탕이나 국거리 메뉴부터 초밥까지 다양한 구성을 가지고 있는데 이것으로 자신의 호불호를 먼저 확인한 다음 큰돈을 들여 한상차림을 감상하길 권장한다.
