· 국제 단위(International Unit, IU)란?

약리학에서 특정 물질의 활성에 따른 양적 단위입니다.

다만, 몸무게를 측정하는 kg이나 lb 같은 단위와 달리 물질마다 고유의 값을 가집니다.

이런 고유값은 물질의 생리 활성이나 효과에 기초하는데, 물질 간에 비교를 용이하게 하기 위해서입니다.

그럼 비타민 A이면 비타민 A이지 무슨 비교할 것이 있냐는 궁금증이 있을 수 있는데요,

비타민 A의 경우 retinol(레티놀), β-carotene(베타카로틴) 등 활성이 다른 형태로 존재하는 물질이 존재하기 때문입니다.

β-carotene은 retinol의 전구체로 우리 몸의 소장에서 retinol로 변환되어 비타민 A의 활성을 가지게 됩니다.

International unit (IU) — In pharmacology, the international unit is a unit of measurement for the amount of a substance; the mass or volume that constitutes one international unit varies based on which substance is being measured, and the variance is based on the biological activity or effect, for the purpose of easier comparison across substances. Despite its name, IU is not part of the International System of Units used in physics and chemistry. The IU should not be confused with the enzyme unit, also known as the international unit of enzyme activity and abbreviated as U.
