Ferrara는 이탈리아의 지명으로서 르네상스 시대에 번창하였으나 16세기 후반에 쇠퇴하였다.
알폰소 2세, 900년된 가문의 공작(Alfonso II, Duke of Ferrara)은 구 귀족으로서 권위, 명분, 가치, 서열을 중요시 한다. 그의 부인(duchess)는 르네상스 시대에 은행업으로 부를 축적한 신흥 귀족의 딸이며, 명분보단 실리를 추구하였고 근대적 가치관(평등, 존중, 자유)를 지닌 여인이었다. 즉 이 둘은 가치관이 전혀 다른 한쌍이었다.
이 작품은 1842년에 쓰여졌으나, 작중 배경은 16세기 이태리이다.
