45. 부정어 neither, nor (문장의 종류 12)

6) neither

neither는 한정사로 명사를 직접 수식할 수도 있고, 대명사가 될 수도 있고, 부사가 될 수도 있다.

(1) 한정사로서의 neither

‘둘 중에서 하나인 …도 아니다’의 뜻이므로 neither 다음에 단수 명사가 오고 단수 취급한다.

Neither answer is entirely correct.

(둘 중) 어느 쪽 답도 완전히 옳지 않다.

Neither boy was in the library.

(둘 중) 어느 소년도 도서관에 있지 않았다.

(2) 대명사로서의 neither

‘둘 중 어느 쪽도 …아니다’는 뜻으로 대명사 역할을 하며, 주어로 쓰이면 단수 취급하는 것이 문법적으로 맞다. 일반적으로 ‘Neither + of + 둘(two)인 주어’의 구문이 정상이며 of이하가 생략될 수 있다.

Neither (of your suggestions) will do.

(너희 두 사람의 제안 중) 어느 쪽으로도 충분하지 않다.

I have waited for you to agree or disagree, but you did neither.

네가 찬성하거나 반대하기를 기다렸지만 너는 어느 쪽도 하지 않았다.

If you run after two hares, you will catch neither.

두 마리의 토끼를 쫓으면 한 마리도 잡지 못한다.

(3) 부사로서 neither

① nor와 함께 ‘상관접속’을 이루어 ‘…도 …도 또한 아니다’는 의미로 두 가지를 다 부정한다. neither A nor B가 주어로 쓰일 때 동사는 가까운 주어인 B에 수를 일치시킨다. 이점은 either A or B도 마찬가지이다.

Neither he nor I have ever been there. (I에 일치)

그도 나도 거기에 가본 적이 없다.

Neither Kim nor his sister has said a word. (his sister에 일치)

김과 그의 여동생 어느 누구도 한 마디 말하지 않았다.

Neither they nor he is present. (he에 일치)

그들과 그는 누구도 참석하지 않고 있다.

② 앞 문장의 부정에 동의하며 새로운 주어로 부정을 나타낼 때는 neither를 사용하며, 그 의미는 ‘…도 또한 …않다/아니다’이다.

가장 중요한 문법사항으로 neither가 항상 절 또는 문장의 처음에 나오기 때문에 문장의 순서가 ‘ neither + (조)동사+주어’로 도치된다.

이때 neither는 ‘not … either’로 바꿀 수 있으며 문장의 순서를 정치한다.

She didn’t realize the fact, and neither did I.

= She didn’t realize the fact, and I didn’t, either.

그녀는 사실을 실감하지 못했고 나도 마찬가지였다.

A : You cannot do that.

B : Neither can you.(= You can’t, either.)

A : 너는 그걸 못해.

B : 너도 못하잖아.

③ Me, neither. : 나도 아니다.

A : I don’t know.

B : Me, neither.

A : 나는 모르겠어.

B : 나도 몰라.

7) nor

nor는 neither와 연결되어 쓰이거나, 앞 나온 부정이 지속됨을 나타내기 위해 사용한다. neither A nor B는 앞에서 설명하였으므로 생략한다.

① nor는 앞에서 부정(문)이 사용되었고 그 부정의 힘이 지속되고 있음 나타낸다.

She didn’t come to see me on Monday. Nor on Tuesday.

그녀는 월요일에 나를 보러 오지 않았다. 화요일에도 그랬다.

Not a building nor a tree was left standing.

한 채의 건물도 한 그루의 나무도 서 있는 것이 없었다.

She left and I never saw her again, nor did I regret it.

그녀가 떠났고, 그녀를 다시 보지못지만 나는 그것을 후회하지도 않았다.

② 긍정문 다음에서 사용되는 nor는 and not의 의미이다.

She is happy, nor need you worry.

그녀는 행복하다, 그러니 너는걱정할 필요가 없다.

③ neither와 비슷한 용법으로 사용될 수 있다.

A : I’m not going.

B : Nor am I.

A : 난 안 갈 거야.

B : 나도 그래.

먼저 Either 는 항상 Or와 함께 쓰이고,

Neither는 항상 Nor 와 함께 쓰인다는 것을 기억하세요!

그리고 Either/Or와 Neither/Nor 는 접속사(conjunctions)로 사용됩니다.

Either 와 Or 는 함께 쓰여서 2개 중에 한 개를 선택하는 것을 제안할 때 사용합니다.

예문> Either mom or dad will pick you up.

엄마나 아빠가 너 데리러 갈거야.

그에 반해 neither 와 nor 는 둘 다 아닌 것으로 부정할 때 사용합니다.
