Synopsis:
West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs–the white Jets led by Riff and the Latino Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway–whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what’s happened, tragedy strikes and doesn’t stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.

‘흥행의 마술사’ 스티븐 스필버그 감독의 뮤지컬 ‘웨스트 사이드 스토리(West Side Story)’가 개봉 첫 주말 북미 지역 1천820개 극장에서 상영되어 1천50만 달러 수입에 그쳤다. 제작비는 1억 달러가 투여됐다.
뉴욕타임스는 15일 헌터대푸에르토리코연구센터(Centro) 디렉터이자 뉴욕시립대(CUNY) 대학원 인류학 교수 야리마 보닐라(Yarimar Bonilla)의 칼럼 “우리가 필요로하지 않는 ‘웨스트 사이드 스토리’ 리메이크(The ‘West Side Story’ Remake We Didn’t Need)’를 실었다.

‘웨스트 사이드 스토리’는 셰익스피어 작 ‘로미오와 줄리엣’에서 영감을 받아 맨해튼 어퍼웨스트사이드(링컨센터 뒤)를 배경으로 백인 갱들과 푸에르토리코계 갱단들의 대결을 그린 1957년 브로드웨이 뮤지컬이 원작으로 레오나드 번스타인이 작곡, 스티븐 손하임이 작사를 맡았다. 1961년 로버트 와이즈와 제롬 로빈스 감독, 나탈리 우드 주연으로 할리우드에서 제작되어 그해 아카데미 최우수 작품상을 비롯 10개 부문을 휩쓸었다.

1961년 영화에서 아니타가 부르는 ‘아메리카’에서 아니타는 섬나라를 떠나서 행복해하며, 그 섬이 바다에 가라앉기를 바란다. 리메이크 버전에서 푸에르토리코에 대한 비하적인 가사는 사라졌다. 아니타는 미국과 푸에르토리코의 삶에 대해 동등하게 노래한다. 갑자기 우리는 스스로에게 질문한다. 그녀의 특별한 체험이 푸에르토리코와 미국 생활 모두에 대한 견해에 어떤 영향을 주는 것일까?

보닐라 교수는 그 푸에르토리칸 이민자들의 노래는 “America”와 공통점이 없으며, “En Mi Viejo San Juan/ In My Old San Juan”과 “Boricua en la Luna/ Boricua on the Moon)”같은 노래는 망명의 고통, 귀국의 희망 및 몇세대에 걸쳐 깊게 뿌리 박힌 정체성 문제 등에 대해 이야기하며, 동화와 귀환의 고통스러운 불가능이 진정한 푸에르토리코의 비극이라고 강조했다.
