Breeding Cowherd Angus Charolais Cattle

disciplined breeding

The beef industry has made great strides over the past 25 years, but when we have strayed from well thought out plans centered on the goal of “efficiently producing high quality beef” and instead lapsed into a fad, we have ground lost.

We believe there are two ways to manage commercial breeding systems that work in most of our trading areas.

System 1:

Use a full Angus breeding program. In many ways this is the easiest system to administer as you only purchase one bull breed and use an EPD database. This system can be kept as a rearing program by other breeding bases and replacement heifers. This system can be tailored to meet the multiple goals of efficient cowherding and high quality beef cattle.

System 2:

Use terminal cross bulls from Charolais. This system works best with an Angus cowherd. Charolais x Angus “Smoky” feeder cattle are the most desirable feeder cattle from feedlots everywhere. Mixed cowherds can also benefit from a Charolais bull. Calves are more uniform and the extra growth and yield can add value to compound feeders.

There is no doubt that heterosis (hybrid power) is real, but our past experiences with it, albeit undisciplined, have caused many problems in the cowherd. System 2 allows you to capture the high growth and high yield of steers and heifers produced on the fattening farm, but requires that replacement heifers be purchased or part of the herd bred with Angus.

Choosing a breeding system should be carefully considered. If you currently have a cowherd, this should be carefully evaluated. Your resources should be considered along with your marketing opportunities. Your breeding system decision does not have to be permanent, but needs to be reviewed from time to time. However, it should only be changed for sound economic reasons, not fads.

Charolais-Angus incentive

Mr. Coffey said the Charolais was a good cross for the Angus cows, producing calves of the same color with no calving problems, maturing earlier and having a good temperament. The Charolais’ potential for rapid growth combined well with the milk and early maturation of the Angus.
