I think I’ve told you many times that my favorite vacation spot is St. John. We’ve been following on social media to see how the rebuild is progressing – and it’s progressing – but not fast enough.
A group of our friends want to return in 2020. We all say that over and over again… In 2020 we’re going back there and reliving the best vacation ever. So St. John and all the hurricane affected islands were on our minds.
One of the places we visited on the way home from St. John was Bones Rum on St. Thomas. Of course, if you go to the islands you will drink lots and lots of rum.
And we did. We definitely supported local rum producers on this journey and in fact we’ve since made a few recipes using Bones Rum like this Coconut Rum Floater and these French Toast Kabobs.
Yes, that’s right, rum for breakfast is perfectly acceptable when you’re in the islands. It’s an official rule somewhere. When we visited Bones Rum we also learned about the history of the islands, the nature of the pirates.
Blackbeard was famous for establishing sentries on St Thomas, at Blackbeard Castle which they have there today and which you can visit. He would climb up there with his rum and watch for ships coming into port so he could rob them.
Goldschlager puts a twist on this classic rum and cola
Now I’m sure Blackbeard really drank his rum out of the bottle – and sometimes I did too. Ok, I’ll pour it in a glass, but straight rum is always good for me. But since I can’t give you a recipe for straight rum, I’ll make this Blackbeard’s Rum and Coke instead.
So how does this differ from the traditional rum and cola recipe? Very simple, I added some gold. And I think Blackbeard would agree.
Just a dash of Goldschlager in the rum gives this rum and coke a mild cinnamon flavor, but more importantly – you’ve got real gold in your drink.
What else can I add to this rum and cola cocktail?
I mean come on How cool is that?
And if you want to overdo it like I did — ask anyone — that’s how I am in real life… make some cool Anchor ice cubes that float in the drink. Or add some fruit like cherries or star fruit on a skewer for garnish.
I can’t wait to whip up a large batch of these drinks and head to my favorite backyard pool destination where we’ll all sip rum and talk about our next epic vacation!
