What is Dick and Angel Strawbridge’s career history?
Before taking her job in television, Dick Strawbridge, 60, had a successful career in the Army. He joined the Royal Corps of Signals and was promoted to Lieutenant and Captain in the 1980s. He was then awarded an MBE in 1993 for distinguished service in the armed forces and later left the company in 2001.
After his Army duties, Dick began using his engineering and environmental knowledge and expertise on many different TV shows such as Scrapheap Challenge, It’s Not Easy Being Green and Coast.

He also directed the ITV show The Hungry Sailors with his son James. Angel Adoree started her career by appearing on the BBC show Dragon’s Den in 2010 with her idea for The Vintage Patisserie, which she still runs today. The couple then began presenting Escape to the Chateau, which documented the purchase and renovation of their 19th-century Château de la Motte-Husson in Martigné-sur-Mayenne, France.

Escape to the Chateau is a Channel 4 reality television series that follows the story of couple Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree, along with their family, as they explore the 19th-century Château de la Motte-Husson in Martigné-sur-Mayenne, France, buy and renovate. while also raising two young children and starting a business catering to weddings and other events. The first season follows Dick and Angel’s quest to restore the derelict castle from its uninhabitable state by installing running water, heating and electricity throughout the 45-room house that had not been occupied in the past forty years. They are working against a deadline – their own wedding to be held at the estate. Subsequent seasons continue the story as they grow their business with special events, while continuing with further renovations and maintenance of the castle and its grounds, and documenting the family events and milestones that take place around them.

Former British Army Lieutenant Colonel Engineer Dick Strawbridge has appeared in numerous television shows including It’s Not Easy Being Green (2006), Coast (2006), Scrapheap Challenge (2009), The Hungry Sailors ( 2011), Saturday Farm (2011) and Dirty Rotten Survival (2015). In Escape to the Chateau, his engineering and cooking experience is highlighted, with a do-it-yourself attitude and mechanical know-how at the forefront, as work on the chateau and surrounding land continues through the seasons.
Angel Adoree[edit]
Angel Adoree, who runs a hospitality business called The Vintage Patisserie[1] for which she was looking to invest when she appeared in Dragon’s Den in 2010,[2] brings a creative factor and flair to the show by adding her style and interior decor Sharing a dexterity for the castle, as well as an interest in hospitality and entertainment to leave lasting memories for their guests.[3][4] Adoree was born Angela Newman and grew up on Canvey Island, where her family runs a jewelry store.[5]

While Dick is happy to have a little more storage space, Angela has bigger plans – turning it into a space-inspired bar with balconies to watch the stars from. The project calls for skylights, a new staircase and unique insulation — but it proves rewarding when a cloudless night provides the perfect opportunity to scout for shooting stars. November 28, 2021 8 6 40 Color Plates, Rendering and Gadage Angela sets out to restore the castle’s walls to their original glory, using computer models to try to match the existing color. While clearing out the pigsty, part of a traditional cider-making device is discovered, so the search for the rest soon begins. Inspired by the old machine, the family collects apples to make their own juice. 5 December 2021 8 7 41 Castle roof, front door and balustrade The wooden double front door with its intricate metal tracery, the metal awnings over the windows and the stone balustrade surrounding the front steps are all in a state of disrepair. Angela’s father, a former jeweler, is trying to make a copy of the huge 150-year-old front door key. The family goes to the beach to collect razor clams. 12 December 2021 8 8 42 Castle Escape for Christmas The Strawbridges visit the Alsace region of France where they sample local delicacies. Background and production[edit]
Dick Strawbridge invited Channel 4 to join them and document their journey in finding a home. The couple had already spent four years looking for a home to raise their two young children, Arthur and Dorothy. Unlike many other home programs, television coverage was never scheduled, but Channel 4 paid for the trip to be documented, which lifted some of the weight that such a major task would take. This came in the form of the presenter’s fee, in addition to exposure from the show’s promotion, which has allowed the business to maintain its popularity as a wedding and event venue.
The appeal of the fair may lie in its affordability at face value and lack of demand for such French property, which attracts many English homebuyers. The same was the case with Dick and Angel because when they first started house hunting in France they looked for more modest properties such as small farmhouses until they found they could buy a chateau at such low prices.[12] For £280,000 they bought a 45-room chateau with a walled garden and moat set in 12 acres of grounds, ten times larger than the average British house. However, the show alerts viewers to the high restoration and running costs of such projects, which can become costly for people trying to turn these castles into a business.[3]
American broadcast[edit]
Escape to the Chateau premiered on local PBS stations in the US.[13] On December 5, 2020, the episodes began airing on HGTV. The first hour-long episode of the series was entitled “Meet the Chateau”, in which Dick and Angel bought the property (including the walled garden), moved in, and then installed electricity and a heating system.
History of the Château de la Motte-Husson [ edit ]
Castle de la Motte-Husson, 1910
From the 12th to the 14th century the site of the castle served as a fortified fortress in the commune of La Motte. In 1406, the Husson family, lords of Montgiroux, named the castle Château de la Motte-Husson.
The Baglion de la Dufferie[15] family (a French branch of the Baglioni family of Perugia)[16] acquired the property in 1600. It was then rebuilt within the square moat in the period 1868-1874. The current facade reflects the efforts of Countess Louise-Dorothée de Baglion de la Dufferie (1826–1902), who told her husband that she wanted a sumptuous residence. The castle served the family as a summer residence.[17]

Escape to the Chateau DIY follows Dick and Angel as they offer their advice to other immigrants to France (including British, Dutch and American expatriates) who are trying to run a business of castles in a similar condition to their own. The series documents various redevelopments and looks at ways to make a profit. The show has four series. It first aired on April 9, 2018 and the third series ended on November 15, 2019.[18] The fourth season aired on March 20, 2020.
