Along with Messages, DMs, Channels, and Servers, they all have unique IDs to help the system work and support audit logs that mean anything at all. You could go years without ever knowing anything about it, but if you ever need to find your Discord user ID, this tutorial will show you how.

Despite managing servers and being with other admins, I’ve never had a reason to know my Discord user ID. I was lucky not to have to trawl through audit logs or refer someone to Discord with the ID. I might be one of the lucky ones, but that means I had to learn how to find the Discord user ID myself before writing this tutorial properly.

Since I tend to use the desktop app, this tutorial uses that one. If you’re using a mobile device, chances are similar features are in similar places.

The Discord user ID

Discord User ID is a numeric string unique to each user. It is used by the back-end of the system to process your chat and voice and keep logs of everything you do. If you’ve ever seen audit logs or needed to explain something about a specific chat, these IDs have been used to identify it.

In order to identify your Discord user ID, you must have developer mode enabled in your app.

On the PC, do the following:

Open Discord and sign in.

Select the gear icon next to your username to access user settings.

Choose Appearance from the left menu.

Scroll to developer mode and turn it on.

On mobile devices, do the following:

Open Discord on your phone and sign in.

Select the user icon at the bottom of the screen.

Scroll down and select Appearance.

Select developer mode and tap to turn it on.

This isn’t like a Firestick, where enabling developer mode leaves you open to hackers. This is just a setting that gives you a little more access to Discord’s back-end. You need it to start accessing IDs for things, which is why we need to enable it.

Identify your own Discord user ID

To find your own Discord user ID, all you have to do is right-click your own name in chat or a channel list and select Copy ID. Paste it somewhere to see it clearly. Mine is an 18 digit number.

On the PC, do the following:

Subscribe to a Discord channel.

Right-click your username in chat or channel list.

Choose Copy ID.

Paste the ID somewhere to view it.

On mobile devices, do the following:

Join a Discord channel and swipe left.

Long press your username in chat or channel list.

Choose Copy ID.

Paste the ID somewhere to view it.

I’ve been using Discord for years and have never needed to see or know my user ID. I will hopefully go for many more years without having to see it again. I hope you feel the same!

Identify someone else’s Discord user ID

Not only can you find out your own Discord user ID, but you can also find out the ID of other users. It is exactly the same process as above. Right click on their username, only this time you can only do it in the channel list on the right. Select Copy ID and paste it somewhere to see it clearly. It should be an 18-digit number similar to your own ID.

Find someone by Discord user ID

If you have someone’s Discord user ID, you can find them and their messages in the desktop app to view their activity in a channel. As far as I know, you can’t search outside of a channel or server using the userid.

On the PC, do the following:

Right-click a username in chat or channel list.

Choose Copy ID.

Paste the ID into the search bar at the top of the Discord app to see their chats.

On mobile devices, do the following:

In chat, long press on a username.

Choose Copy ID.

Paste the ID into the search bar to see their chats.

You should see a panel on the right showing all your chats during the session. It’s a small thing, but if you’re a moderator or something, it might be useful.

Identify a message ID

If you’re reporting a comment or chat to an admin, mod, or Discord yourself, you’ll likely be asked for the message ID. Every message in Discord generates a unique identifier that helps server owners and Discord itself find conversations. It is used in ailments and might be useful to know.

If you need to record a message ID from the middle chat window, do the following:

Right click on the line in the chat and select Copy ID or left click and select the three dots on the right side and select Copy ID.

Both copy the unique message ID of that chat line. If you examine a few rows, you will see that each has a unique identifier. Record some or all if you need to report something. The server owner or admin can check the audit logs and Discord can check its own logs much faster with the message ID.
