Update your GPS navigation system

Navigators are incredibly handy pieces of equipment, guiding us to our destinations with clear directions and even quick visualization when needed. But what if a new road is built that could get you there faster? Or when a new residential area you want to navigate to is still just a box on your old sat nav?

With the ever-changing infrastructure around us, we may need to update our navigation devices from time to time to avoid being sent onto a road that no longer exists or right past that new interchange. Here’s a quick guide to getting yours up to date.

What is a navigation update?

Navi updates do not physically change the navi but rather update the software installed on these mini computers. A bit like your phone or computer, navigation systems use an operating system that gives users an interface to choose their route, as well as the clever bits like calculating distances and connecting to the satellites that get them up and running in the first place. This software changes when a new update is installed.

If the road layout changes or a route improves, the maps stored on your navigation device may suddenly become out of date. If this is the case, the manufacturer of the navigation device changes the map stored in the latest software package and makes it available to its customers.

When should I update my sat nav?

As a rule of thumb, you should update your navigation device every three to six months. Even if you don’t travel far with your sat nav, it’s still a good idea to update it as the road layout changes quickly and you don’t want to add time to your trip without reason. The other important reasons to update your navigator are software improvements and bug fixes for the navigator itself. Just like the updates on your phone, updated navigators often bring new handy features or solve common problems, making it quick to connect to the computer or connect to WiFi can improve your navigation device.

TomTom and Garmin require you to download programs onto your PC or Mac, and they regularly check for updates and notify you when a new one is available. Once an update has been found and downloaded, you need to connect your navigation device to your computer. Depending on the size of the update, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

Some of our sat nav models now have Wi-Fi connectivity and automatic updates. If you have this feature, all you have to do is connect your navigation device to your home Wi-Fi network and the navigation device will do the rest. Some apps that use GPS also require a working data connection. If your WiFi or mobile data connections aren’t working properly, this may be the reason why your app isn’t doing its GPS-related job. So try switching to a different WiFi network, switching between WiFi and mobile data, or just moving to a place with better reception.

If you can access websites and use data services in other apps, this is probably not the problem. However, eliminating it as a malefactor is quick and easy.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

OK, you’ve probably already tried this, but for the sake of completeness we have to suggest the quickest and most obvious solution first. In case you didn’t know, there is a toggle for GPS functionality in the app shadow quick menu.

The “app shadow” is that drawer, accessed by swiping from the top of the screen. Different Android skins may not look exactly the same, but you’ll still find a GPS toggle of sorts here.

Flipping this virtual switch also resets the GPS hardware. Often this is enough to restart the process of acquiring a GPS lock.

Reboot & Airplane Mode

If that quick toggle flip isn’t enough, there’s a slightly more nuclear option you can try. You can simply turn on Airplane mode, which disables all wireless communication. Wait a few seconds and then disable it again. Sometimes this works when toggling GPS doesn’t work.

The next step would be to completely reboot the phone. If toggling GPS, airplane mode, and rebooting doesn’t work, it suggests that the problem is due to something more permanent than a glitch.

Try using better accuracy modes

Modern Android phones can help improve GPS accuracy in a number of ways. If your GPS is taking forever to get a connection or is performing poorly, you should check whether you have these accuracy helpers enabled or not.

This is pretty easy to do. Just pull down the app shadow and tap and hold the location shortcut to go to settings.

Depending on your version of Android or the brand of your phone, the exact name or method may vary, but this is how you can access it quickly in most cases. Alternatively, you can go to the Android settings page and look for location settings there.

There are two interesting stops on the Location Settings page. First, make sure your phone is set to use Bluetooth and WiFi to improve GPS accuracy. When this option is enabled, your phone can search for local Wi-Fi hotspots or known Bluetooth beacons, instantly showing your approximate location.

You should also check if Google location accuracy is enabled.

This should help improve positioning significantly.

Charge your phone or turn off battery saver mode

The GPS functionality is quite power hungry. When your phone’s charge is too low, it may switch to a special power saving mode. Either the default that comes as part of Android or maybe a modified one tweaked by your phone manufacturer.

So if your battery is red and the battery saver mode is on, disabling it may get your GPS working properly again. Although, of course, your phone’s battery will now drain much faster. Alternatively, you can try just plugging the phone in, which will turn off the power saving mode. That’s why it’s a good idea to always have a power bank or USB car charger handy.

Reinstall or update your Maps application

Sometimes it’s not your phone’s GPS that’s the problem, it’s the app that’s supposed to be using it. You can confirm this by switching to another independent application that uses GPS. If this app works well, then we must turn our attention to the uncooperative culprit.

There are basically two options here. One is to go to your app store and see if your mapping application has a pending update. If the version is too far behind, it may not be able to work with the service at home. If no updates are pending, simply uninstalling and reinstalling the app will suffice.

Use a GPS diagnostic app

Apps like Google Maps put an easy-to-use software layer between you and the GPS receiver hardware in your phone. That’s how it should be, but it can also get a little mysterious when the app stops working properly.

Fortunately, there are GPS apps for Android phones that will show you the raw GPS hardware data. This is useful both for quickly sharing your exact coordinates with someone and for diagnosing GPS problems.

One app we can recommend is GPS Status and Toolbox, which shows you all the numbers your GPS device is throwing right on the screen. If you have another phone with the app, you can compare the readings to make sure it looks right, and if it’s showing nothing at all or throwing an error, you might be looking for a hardware issue that requires a call to a repair shop.

Again on the street

Suddenly getting lost in unfamiliar territory can be a little scary, but after going through this checklist of potential issues, hopefully you’ll be at your destination in no time. However, no technology is perfect, so we still recommend that you buy a real paper map and have it with you in case you just can’t get Android GPS to work or you just run out of power.

GPS is a fascinating technology and if you have time check out HDG Explains: How Does GPS Work? for a better understanding of the nuts and bolts of everything. Will Halfords update my sat nav?

At Halfords, all of our sat navs are sold with free lifetime map updates, so keeping your sat nav’s information up to date has never been easier. If you’re using a sat nav with a Wi-Fi connection then you can download map updates without having to plug anything in.

How can I change the volume of my Mercedes-Benz navigation?

With the help of a good sat nav, you can confidently navigate every journey, spending less time worrying about directions and more time enjoying the open road.

At Halfords we offer a market leading range of the UK’s latest sat navs with all the features you could want from traffic information and 3D maps to POIs and driver assistance systems. Our handy navigation device buying guide will help you find the right navigation device for you.

What is a navi?

A navigation device is a technology designed to make our time in the driver’s seat much easier and more enjoyable. Typically, navigation devices are small touchscreen devices that attach to your car’s windshield with a suction cup. As you drive, they’ll help you plan your route and give you all the directions you need along the way, both with on-screen directions and a friendly voice to guide you through the necessary turns.

How do navigation devices work?

Sat navs work with GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite receivers to calculate your position on Earth, which then pinpoints your position to within 10 meters. This is then compared to currently stored digital maps, allowing you to see your position on an on-screen digital road map. In short, you tell the sat nav where you want to go and it finds the best way to get you there.

Why buy a sat nav?

No matter where you travel, a navigation device should make life easier and more relaxed. By guiding you step-by-step through your journey, long gone are the days when you had to puzzle over tattered maps at rest stops or look for non-existent road signs.

Journeys have never been faster either, with live traffic updates to distract you from traffic jams and accidents, which is useful on both old and new routes.

Some models can even tell you exactly where you parked your car with parking guidance. Say goodbye to wandering around the parking lot with your key fob in the air!

Is a navigation system better than a smartphone app?

Almost all smartphones produced today are equipped with apps that offer map functions, traffic information and suggested detours. With this in mind, why is a dedicated navigator a better option than a cell phone?

First, unlike many phone apps, dedicated navigation devices don’t rely on cellular data. Instead, they use GPS signals, which means you don’t have to worry about your data connection dropping or your monthly mobile data allowance running out. Also, when driving abroad, the charges can get very high if you use mobile apps like Google or Apple Maps that constantly download map images while driving.

Then there is the legal aspect. Just touching your mobile phone while driving a vehicle (even while sitting in traffic) can penalize you with a fine of £60 and three penalty points, or a whopping £1,000 fine and immediate disqualification if your case goes to court. With a sat nav, you won’t be tempted to glance at that text message or try to make a call. Plus, you’ll save your phone’s battery and the map and directions won’t disappear from the screen when someone calls you!

In addition, navigation devices offer a range of functions that mobile phones simply cannot offer. From traffic information to driver alerts, navigation devices are designed by driving experts for drivers, not by developers looking to create a handy app that complements the rest of a smartphone’s functionality.

They also don’t suffer from the pesky quirks that plague smartphone navigation apps, such as: B. the disappearance of the map if you accidentally swipe the screen, the screen will automatically dim if it has not been touched for a while, notifications blocking the map, and so on. The blue navigation icon refuses to point in the right direction pointing, and forces you to wave your phone around in the air to recalibrate it!

Navigation features to help you navigate and drive

As with almost any technology, the more you spend, the more features it will have. So what about Navis? Let’s take a look at the many ways different features benefit your journey.

Touch screen

All navigation devices have touchscreens with a keyboard that appears on the screen for you to enter addresses or locations. Many have prediction systems similar to text messages, which can save time.

routing

All navigation devices will automatically reroute you and put you back on the right track if you accidentally make a wrong turn or need to take a detour

However, routing is becoming more sophisticated and intelligent every day. Navis can now update your route based on live traffic information and calculate the quickest route for the time of day. Over time, they get used to your everyday life and ask whether you drive home or to work with electricity.

Many also offer route preference options, allowing drivers to specify what is most important to their journey, whether it’s getting to their destination as quickly or leisurely as possible, or avoiding costs like toll booths. The navigation system then plans a corresponding route.

Advanced lane guidance

Advanced Lane Guidance models show you which lane to be in when driving through an intersection, and prepare and warn you of complex turns in advance.

The Garmin Drive 52 EU navigator is a heavyweight navigator that offers advanced lane guidance, including charts showing traffic signs to look out for. That means all you have to do is glance at the sat nav if you forget to listen for the voice directions or end up at a particularly tricky junction or intersection!

International Maps

Sat navs aren’t just useful for driving in the UK; They are also extremely useful when traveling abroad. They offer a helping hand on unfamiliar roads and can also point out amenities and attractions, from landmarks to restaurants.

It’s important to ensure that the navigation device you’re considering offers the full range of maps you need. All Halfords sat navs offer UK and Ireland maps, but if you know you might be traveling to Europe, consider paying a little more for a sat nav with UK and Europe maps.

Check out the TomTom GO Classic 6″ for a great satnav with European maps, plus Wi-Fi and real-time traffic information from TomTom Traffic.

Live traffic information

Whether you’re driving in a congested city or simply want to avoid significant delays on your daily commute, up-to-date traffic information comes in handy in almost any situation and alerts you to potential obstacles on your journey.

In general, these traffic reports are transmitted via your mobile phone data. Your navigation device connects to the relevant app on your phone and uses it to access live traffic information.

map updates

With the UK road system constantly changing and new houses being built all the time, it’s important to keep your sat nav up to date. At Halfords all our sat navs are sold with free lifetime map updates so keeping your sat nav information up to date has never been easier.

If you’re using a navigation device with a Wi-Fi connection, you can download map updates without having to connect anything. If not, you just need to connect the navigation device to a computer using the USB cable or it may come with a removable memory card that you need to connect to your computer.

speed warnings

Speed camera alerts are technically “alerts” warning you to be careful. Usually, when you approach a camera, a beep will sound, reminding you to check your speed. Some top-end models can even locate mobile cameras, although this may require a subscription fee.

If you’re keen to explore this feature, check out the TomTom GO Discover 5-inch car navigator or the Garmin DriveSmart 66 with Alexa. These issue clear acoustic and visual warnings when the car approaches camera-controlled road sections. Includes speed limit graphic so you don’t slam on the brakes at the last minute.

Points of Interest (POIs)

POIs are stored in your navigation device and appear on your map as you approach them. These can be functional facilities like gas stations, ATMs, and parking lots, but also places like restaurants and hotels, beaches, landmarks, historical sites, parks, and more.

We stock a range of models with free POI downloads such as the TomTom GO Classic 5″ Navigator and the Garmin Drive 52MT-S with UK Maps 5″ Navigator.

voice recognition

The best satnav models come with voice control, so you can set routes with your voice instead of having to stop the car to use the touchscreen. This is incredibly handy when you need to re-plan your route either on the go or in a hurry.

For excellent voice control navigation, we recommend starting with the TomTom Go Essential 5-inch navigation system and the Garmin DriveSmart 66 navigation system. These navigation systems are designed to give extremely clear instructions in an assertive but easy to understand voice, telling you when it’s time to take a break or when the route has been altered to avoid traffic jams.

connectivity

Using a GPS with Bluetooth can be incredibly useful. You can wirelessly connect to your phone and the navigator can browse contacts, make a call and act as a microphone and speaker so you can use your phone hands-free. As mentioned above, this also gives you access to live traffic updates and other information.

For sat navs with this feature, take a look at the TomTom GO Discover 7″ Car Navi or the Garmin Drive 52MT-S with UK Maps 5″ Sat Nav.

screen size

Generally, sat nav screens can range from 5 to 7 inches in diameter when measured diagonally. The displays on most models are now really premium, so it comes down to personal preference. A large-screen sat nav is easier to see, and the touchscreen might also be easier to use.

What is the best navi?

Essentially, the best navigation device is the one that best suits your needs in terms of features offered and pricing relative to your budget. There are also several leading brands to consider – we’ll cover each of them shortly.

How much does a navigation system cost?

Navigation device prices can vary depending on the features and specifications you are looking for. At Halfords we have a wide range to choose from, from entry level sat navs under £100 to the best on the market at over £400. What is the difference? Well, as with anything, you get what you pay for, so it depends on how you want to use your sat nav and how often. In general, the more additional functions a navigation system has, the higher the price.

Brands of Navis

The two world market leaders for navigation devices are TomTom and Garmin.

TomTom is a Dutch navigation and mapping company whose navigation devices are known for their accuracy and reliability. In fact, TomTom and navigation devices have become synonymous in popular jargon! When you choose a TomTom sat nav, you’ll have access to plenty of features designed to make life on busy roads and motorways easier, as well as great customer support and online instructions so you can really learn how to get the most out of it make from your sat nav.

Garmin is now an American technology company that makes navigation aids for all sorts of markets. This includes GPS technology for cyclists, joggers and even sailors. If you decide on a Garmin navigation system, you will get a navigation system used by professionals with a stylish user interface and super-fast computing times.

TomTom and Garmin navigators are all great purchases depending on what you need. Just make sure you read the descriptions and feature list that comes with each device so you can get an idea of which features are most important to you.

Navis for different vehicles and drivers

There are also navigation devices that are made for specific purposes and vehicle types.

Navigation systems for truck drivers and trucks

Purchasing sat navs and data specifically for larger vehicles like trucks is important as they will only take you on routes appropriate for the length, width, height and weight of your vehicle. So you can avoid low bridges and restricted roads and also find places to park the vehicle overnight.

One of the best sat navs for truck and long-distance drivers is the TomTom GO Expert Truck Sat Nav 6″. This top-of-the-line sat nav is packed with numerous features that make longer journeys safer, including an exceptionally clear and crisp HD resolution screen, TomTom traffic info, professional large vehicle navigation and the most accurate and up-to-date world maps on the truck navigator market.

Garmin also offers a truck navigator – check out the Garmin Dezl 580 LMT-S truck navigator with full maps of Europe.

Navis for caravans and mobile homes

You can also buy navigation devices with camper-specific features, such as B. Road alerts and custom routes tailored to the size and weight of your camper or trailer. They also help you find your favorite campsite or stopover by filtering directories.

The best sat nav for campers is the Garmin CamperVan EU MT-S navi, specially designed for drivers with caravans and trailers in tow. Definitely worth checking out before your next camping holiday.

GPS accessories

Navis can offer a whole range of services. However, to get the most out of your device, it’s important to look for accessories that will increase your navigation device’s functionality and long-term durability.

GPS mounts

Most sat navs come with a mount and suction cup that attaches to your windshield or dashboard. Some can be attached to one of your air vents. You should position your mount so that it does not obstruct your view of the road and that the charging cable does not get in the way of your car’s controls. If you lose your mount, don’t panic; Replacement and additional holders can also be purchased separately.

Here you can browse our different GPS mounts.

cases

When you are not using your sat nav, you should protect the screen with a sat nav case. A soft carrying case protects it from simple bumps and scrapes, while a sturdier, solid case accommodates cables and accessories. We offer a range of GPS accessories from Garmin, TomTom and our own brands, both online and in store.

Storage

Many navigation devices have space for an additional memory card, which allows you to store more maps, information and recordings from a dashboard camera. Browse our range of micro SD cards.

How does a standalone satnav compare to a built-in one?

When you buy a new car, you may be offered a built-in navigation device as an add-on purchase. Be warned as these can cost a lot more than a stand alone sat nav, sometimes in excess of £1,000. This is usually because you have to choose them as part of an expensive multimedia system.

Worse, the maps they use and features they offer could be outdated, while map updates incur additional costs and need to be installed at a service center from manufacturer-specific USBs, which you may never get to. Additionally, traffic alerts are not very responsive compared to live traffic data and may only be available by subscription.

In addition, you can transfer a standalone navigation device from one vehicle to another. They’re also ready to go right out of the box, so whatever your travel plans or vehicle options, they’re an easy way for both experienced and new drivers to take the stress out of driving.

What laws apply to navigation devices?

The majority of navigation device laws provide sensible safety tips such as: B. Not having an obstructed view of the road or not being distracted by screens.

One condition motorists need to be aware of is that it is against the law to hold a GPS device in your hand while driving – just like a cell phone.

Instead, drivers must have hands-free access. This can be done by activating your navigation device with voice commands or by setting up your navigation device in a safe place.

It is important that drivers are familiar with the legal use of their navigation system. This is now a requirement for the British driving test.

Navi suitable

We know that sometimes it is difficult to set up and get used to a navigation device. So if you buy a sat nav from Halfords we can set it up for you and give you a demo for free. So let our experts take care of the installation work, tidy up unsightly cables and give your navigation system that professional touch.
