There are two different species under the name raccoon. One of them is known by the common name raccoon – the Procyon lotor raccoon is a mammal of the family Procyonidae, naturally occurring in North America (Canada and the USA) and also known by the name American raccoon.

Its fur is greyish-brown in colour, some with more and others with less pronounced shading, and a ringed tail consisting of five to seven brown or black rings. Its fur is dense and of medium length, which is shorter in summer. There are some rare American white raccoons that are all albinos. In the United States, raccoon fur is a popular and common fur.

The other raccoon species is known as the Finn raccoon, one tends to mistake this for the European raccoon species, but this is absolutely not the case.

He’s also known by the name Dog Raccoon (which causes a lot of confusion since he’s not a dog at all!). The largest farms of this type of fur are specifically in Finland and Scandinavia. Its hair is longer than a normal raccoon and it is more of a reddish gold and copper color, it also has a bushier tail that is a uniform color. “I think there’s a huge market for women who just want to add a little bit of volume, they just want to add a little bit of body. And I think if you sew in a strand of silk or even two, it makes women feel younger, prettier and sexier,” Kacey added. “And because they’re so comfortable and because they’re so easy to care for, it’s just one of those things that we’ve added to our beauty routine.”

There are few hair changes that offer such a drastic makeover with as little effort as extensions. We love the way expansions make us feel like a mermaid goddess on the fly, but of course there are some downsides. Depending on the type of extension you choose and how you treat it (e.g. using keratin bonded hair) you could actually be causing damage. Tape-ins tend to slip out randomly (plus, you can’t really use conditioner), and clip-ins are only good for daytime use. Fortunately, a lot of these elongation problems are avoided with silk threads. We tapped into celebrity extensions expert Rikke Gajda for everything we need to know about the new way of wearing it.

What is a silk shot?

“Silk wefts are a thinner form of regular, woven extensions,” Rikke explains why they’re definitely game-changing. “Silk weft extensions don’t have any back hairs (the short little hairs that are usually on top of the wefts) so they allow for a natural, very flat and comfortable application,” she continues, and that naturally separates them from the pack (hair) .

How to apply

The application of silk threads is key. Stylists apply pearl thread in many different ways, and silk thread is no different — “You can apply it with any technique you like,” says Rikke. She applies it with fewer beads and no sewing, “so it’s a lot less bulky and more comfortable to wear, and also less unnecessary work for the stylist and the client,” she explains. Although people think that silk threads are based on knotted hair, that’s actually not true. The hair is simply pulled through the bead – just like any other bead extension application. Again, the difference is that the wefts are super light (and the beads are evenly spaced) so there is no damage from too much weight from the bead. “I have been using this application method for years and have had no damage from any customer. If anything, I’ve seen damage from other customers who had too many beads and caused the hair to become matted and tangled at the root,” adds Rikke.

Although silk threads are a great alternative to waiting for your hair to grow, remember that it’s not really your hair and you need to treat it with extra care; Part of doing extensions is making regular visits to your stylist. “Maintenance is easy with my silk thread application method – you come back after about 6-8 weeks to have them tightened,” she explains of the 30-minute appointment, where the beads are simply pushed up.

Silk thread may be expensive, but consider it a long-term investment. With good care the hair can last up to two years – note that after a few sessions to lift the weft the weft should be removed and reapplied.

One of the hardest parts about buying silk thread (or an extension) is knowing how much hair you’re getting. With silk threads, each hair pack weighs 100g and how much you buy depends only on the look you are going for. “If you’re just looking for a little more fullness and a little more length, 1 pack will do,” recommends Rikkie. “For a normal lengthening and thickening application I would say I use between 1.5 and 2 packs and if you are looking for extra thickness you will need 3 packs. Do they leave tangles/residue in the hair?
