Many cereals (e.g., cornflakes) list the nutritional label as 1 cup, which weighs about 28 grams (about 1 ounce). One of General Mills’ new Curves cereals, Whole Grain Crunch, has a serving size of 3/4 cup, or 27 grams. It’s slightly denser than cornflakes, so a serving is less than a cup.

But the even denser Honey Crunch has a serving size of 1 cup and 53 grams.

Why would you eat a bigger bowl with a denser cereal? Here’s the Food and Drug Administration’s specific procedure for determining serving sizes of cereal: The serving size, in standard cup measurements, must be that which contains an amount of cereal that most closely approximates one of the reference amounts commonly consumed per meal occasion. The FDA has three standard RACs for cereals: 15 grams, 30 grams, and 55 grams.

The weight listed on the label must match the weight of grain actually contained in that next portion cup. So General Mills has someone weigh a cup of cereal and choose the RACC closest to them. Then they take the RACC weight of cereal and see how many cups it actually fills, then they take the next standard cup size and weigh that amount of cereal.

A bowl of cereal can be a great way to start the day. Choose a low-sugar, high-fiber granola, add some trimmed milk and you’ll get a head start on your daily fiber and calcium intake and fuel up on long-lasting energy. But how much cereal do you eat for breakfast? And what does that have to do with nutritional information?

According to cereal packs, most serving sizes are around 30g to 50g. Depending on the muesli, this can be between 1/3 cup and 1 cup. Cereal and granola tend to be heavier, while puffed or flaky grains are lighter.

Another thing that can affect how much cereal we eat is the size of our bowl. Studies have shown that both the size of the bowl or plate we use and the size of the pack we eat from can affect how much we eat, with larger bowls and packs leading to us eating more meal.

We put portion bias to the test by comparing the portion size listed on a packet of Sanitarium Natural Muesli, Fruit & 5 Grains to what we would have actually put in our breakfast bowl.

What’s on the pack

50g serving size (just under half a cup): 780kJ, 5.2g protein, 3.5g fat, 0.9g saturated fat, 31.1g carbohydrate, 10.5g sugars, 4.6g fiber, 28 mg sodium

vs

What we put in our bowl

100g serving (one cup): 1560kJ, 10.3g protein, 6.9g fat, 1.8g saturated fat, 62.6g carbohydrate, 21g sugars, 9.1g fiber, 55mg sodium

We found it really interesting to weigh how much cereal we ate. It gave us some good information to measure exactly how much nutrition our breakfast was giving us (before we added milk, yogurt, or sugar).

Instead of automatically assuming we’re eating Sanitarium’s suggested ‘serving size’, we read the nutritional information ‘per 100g’. That way we knew we were having a good, filling breakfast rather than a light one. Hopefully that’s what our stomach told us anyway.

All of this can make it really difficult to convert measurements.

To make things a little easier for you, I’m including conversion tables for commonly used ingredients.

Depending on the blogs you follow or the books you read, you will encounter different measurements. The United States uses the US customary system, which in many respects is very similar to imperial measurements.

These systems are often ubiquitous and not always easy to convert.

In contrast, metric measurements are related in multiples of 10, so you can easily switch between them depending on whether you want to use a measuring cup or a spoon.

While glass measuring cups often list both cups and ounces as well as cups and milliliters, they aren’t always printed side-by-side, nor are they easily compared visually. And that’s just the volume we’re talking about!

Get more useful cooking conversions:

In addition, you add weight to the mix. In fact, there are recipes that call for specific ingredients like flour and sugar by weight—especially in baking recipes from blogs or cookbooks from outside the United States.

But here in the US, we’re used to measuring them in cups rather than grams. Hmmm, what to do in these cases?

Well, you could weigh them out with a kitchen scale if you have one, or use our cups-to-ounces-to-grams chart below for common ingredients instead.

You can print out this general cup to ounce to milliliter chart for common measurement conversions. But please note that it doesn’t work for every single ingredient, only those whose density is very similar to that of water.

Cups Ounces Milliliters ¼ cup 2 oz 60 ml ½ cup 4 oz 120 ml ¾ cup 6 oz 180 ml 1 cup 8 oz 240 ml 2 cup 16 oz 480 ml

Sometimes when I’m not sure about a recipe but still want to try it, I scale the recipe down to 50% of the original. In these circumstances, I found it very difficult to calculate 50% of 3/4 cup, or measure 50% of 1.5 tablespoons, etc. Then I found this handy chart in my Baking For Dummies book. For example, 3/4 of a cup equals 12 tablespoons, so half of that would be 6 tablespoons.

How many cups is 50g of cereal?

According to cereal packets, most serving sizes are around 30g-50g. Depending on the cereal, this can be between 1/3 cup and 1 cup. Muesli and granola tends to be heavier, while puffed or flaked grains are lighter. Another thing that can affect how much cereal we eat is the size of our bowl.

The Best Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

How many grams is a cup of puffed rice?

Macronutrients : A cup of this puffed grain (14 g) offers only 33 calories and 10 g of carbs, which is significantly low especially it being from a cereal category.

Is Puffed Rice (Kurmura, Murmura, Mamra) Healthy?

The mere thought of puffed rice will remind you of the roadside bhaiya that prepares bhel with kurmura, delicious and colorful chutneys along with potatoes, onions, sev, papdi and of course the upbeat chaat masala. Surely each of you loves this famous roadside delicacy of Mumbai. But how healthy is that? The Geela Bhel we enjoy adds over 450 calories, which is far in excess of what we need at snack time. Additionally, it’s loaded with fried and high-carb ingredients. Here we will discuss the benefits of just using puffed rice – the main ingredient in this recipe.

Geela Bhel

Puffed rice, also known as kurmura or mamra or murmura, is a grain prepared from rice. It is made by heating rice grains under high pressure in the presence of steam to form puffed grains. It is white, light and crunchy in texture. That is what attracts many of us. In addition, it is also the low calorie content that draws the attention of many weight watchers. Before we uncover its health benefits, let’s examine its nutrient profile in detail.

Health Benefits of Puffed Rice

Macronutrients: One cup of this puffed grain (14g) offers only 33 calories and 10g of carbohydrates, which is considerably low, especially when it comes to grains. Well, it also offers minimal fat. Only about 0.01g. But on the downside, it really doesn’t even offer any protein or fiber either.

Vitamins and Minerals: Because puffed rice is made by processing rice, most of the nutrients are lost in the process. What remains is the endosperm and with it the carbohydrate and minimum B vitamin count. So often manufacturers fortify it with iron and other B vitamins. Some vitamins and minerals worth looking into are iron (0.92mg), folic acid (21.6mcg), vitamin B1 (0.02mg), vitamin B3 (0.57mg) and phosphorus (21mg ). It is not a notable source of most other nutrients.

How healthy is puffed rice for weight loss?

Moong Bhel

As is now very easily understood, puffed rice is low in calories and should therefore reasonably be added to a weight loss diet. While it can be argued that it really doesn’t add any calories compared to other cereals. But for an ingredient to be good for weight loss, low calories aren’t the only green signal. Protein and fiber are equally important. The ingredients should also be a good source of these 2 key nutrients. Protein is needed to build muscle and help with weight loss, while fiber is needed to keep you full for long and avoid binge eating. Puffed rice that isn’t high in fiber will make you feel hungry faster. So this is not a very healthier addition to a weight loss diet. However, when compared to fried snacks and other high-calorie, high-carb snacks, puffed rice scores the highest. So it’s entirely up to you to make your wise choice. So try this high-protein moong bhel that contains cooked sprouted moong and puffed rice to make it healthy.

Is puffed rice suitable for diabetes?

Nutritious bhel, heart healthy and diabetic friendly bhel

This grain is also not the best choice for diabetics. The main reason for this is its high glycemic index. It is very important for diabetics to know the glycemic index. Low glycemic index foods do not raise blood sugar levels quickly, making them a preferred choice for their diet. On the other hand, foods with a high glycemic index can lead to a significant and rapid rise in blood sugar levels. Puffed rice is therefore best avoided. Learn all about the glycemic index. Try this nutritious bhel where we’ve reduced the amount of puffed rice and added high-fiber sprouts and fruits to make it diabetic-friendly.

Key takeaway for puffed rice

Sprout and Fruit Bhel

Puffed rice is not a very healthy grain as it lacks most of the nutrients including protein and fiber. So it is best avoided by Weight Watchers and Diabetes. However, if you plan to consume it occasionally, it would be best to add ingredients like sprouts, fruits and/or vegetables to puffed rice and create a tasty and healthier dish. These ingredients would add fiber and protein and also help lower the overall glycemic index score. We have a Sprout and Fruit Bhel recipe for you to try. This recipe contains all the so-called ingredients. However, limit your consumption of this bhel to no more than half a serving and include those calories and carbohydrates as part of your daily meal plan.
