(Pocket-lint) – Tumblr has just had a major update, allowing users to interact with each other one-on-one in real time and on a thread basis.

It has launched an instant messaging feature for the Android, iOS and web versions of its service. Unfortunately, it’s a limited launch, where only 1,500 users get access to the feature right away, and then whoever those people happen to message will also get the new feature, creating a Domino-like rollout. The company plans to open it to everyone else in December.

Tumblr is once again trying to keep creators on the platform — and encouraging more bloggers to sign up — by rolling out its second monetization feature in eight months.

The new tipping feature allows users to tip their favorite creators on the platform. All you have to do is select the “Tips” tab on a post you want to give and then select the amount you want to give – up to $100. You can send it anonymously or add a message and see who else has sent tips on the same post. The Tip Jar is already available to all users in the US and will be expanded soon.
