Now to the question. I think some of the main problems I encounter when confronted with a starter are simple. For the same reason, people don’t like to reply to posts that have no content, they don’t like to spontaneously come up with their own stuff. Maybe it seems like people don’t get it in advance, or it’s difficult to get into the story mode or follow the atmosphere. Sometimes it’s just because you’re nervous about a new player and make amends! Especially in forum roleplaying, you can feel like there’s a lot of pressure on you to get a really good scenario that you can just keep playing for a while.
So first, remember that it’s just an initial post! You don’t have to be special or unique. You don’t have to write the best post ever to reply to this, you just have to get the ball rolling. I personally see no problem in starting small and building up like a snowball. A lot of forum posts start with HUGE and that can be intimidating not only for you but also for the person you are replying to. A better idea is to introduce something to work with, all you need is a piece of bait and a trap to put it in. Here are some of my favorite RPG starters that I’m assuming should the starter idea actually work for you!
Start with a “BANG!” This is actually very similar to the last post I made, but it still works just as well for the beginning of an RPG as it does for a break in one. Start with something loud, sudden, and direct. Someone suddenly running around a corner, a sudden attack, a loud noise, a scream, a door slamming, a backfire, a book being dropped, a loud dog making your character gasp. Look at your partner, is there anything you can play with to get things going? Do you hate swearing? Do they have issues with certain animals or situations and can you use that to force the two of you into fast company? When things suddenly appear out of nowhere, give the two of you a chance to act on them as characters and share an experience. This automatically gives support for contraction. So just blast something random and hope!
Set a goal that you want to achieve. Think of something important to your character or their character or both. Make it your goal now. How do you get there? Well, first you need an attitude, and then you know how far you are from it. Note the environment and then your character’s reaction to the environment in relation to the objective. Is it far away? Are there any obstacles? Completely ignore the other person and then do something special. Focus on it very much, shout out loud, do something that YOU can respond to and bam, now you have an act. You two talk now and there is a common goal! Have fun!
Introduce/focus on a character trait. Your character has quirks, or well, they should. Biting your lip, tapping your foot, smoking, or anything else you can see or hear. Something another person notices and can react to. let her do it Explain the action, explain what it vaguely means to want to get their attention and ask questions about it. drop hints. Make them frown and shake their heads when they notice, laugh at themselves, whatever suits their personality. Pretend they’re all alone, then leave an opening for the other character to come in out of nowhere. Bam, set up and created focus.
Focus on the setting. This one can be mixed with any other to add length and it’s pretty easy. Just set up a scene. Where would your character likely be or where would you like him to be? Explain it. Just imagine it for a minute, this forest, this city, this playground. How about a store? Maybe a garden or a park, maybe a mall or a house or a warehouse. anything. When you heard those words, you had a pretty stereotypical vision in your head, right? Explain it. As much as it may seem like an automatic reaction to you, other people have no idea and will love world building. Then drop your character in the middle as a focus point at the end of the post and it will become the target. Role play initiated. Well, some ways to get new attitudes out of the old ideas are to focus on the mood. Gloomy places can be dark, wet, and damp. Add some fog, play with the idea of creaking in the background. Have fun! Whatever fits into the universe works. want happy Golden sunlight maybe, throw in some flowers. butterflies are beautiful Do you really want to throw them for a loop? (This is good for role-players, it shakes them up and makes them WANT to post.) Set up a scene that is completely at odds with your plot ideas. A horror scene in a perfectly innocent garden with happy cute bunnies and stuff the creeping Willis will give you if you do it right because the sun is supposed to save you from those things. Making them appear more powerful is great mental manipulation and a lot of fun. Same goes for the opposite, romance in a dungeon? Why not? Another way to edit it is very similar to the last one, but instead of focusing on mood, focus on the area to fight. For example, explain a boulder coming out of the ground, or fallen buildings, or punching bags. Set up tables and things, environmental things that you can trigger or use in a fight. Even if it’s just a room with a couch, chair, TV, and table, you all have something to work with. Basically just another “make a cool place and throw people in” thing.
To bump into someone. Literally. Just make your character pay attention to something else, distract them and run right into the other character. Easy. Drop something when you want to start a conversation; a shiny object they want to hide, a deep secret not otherwise revealed, something they like breaking, a flood of papers. Whatever fits the scene. It gives you both something to work off and lots of emotional play when done well. (Imagine dropping a severed arm… Gosh, imagine trying to respond to that. So much fun!)
“I’m hungry.” Someone, somewhere in Storyland, is always hungry. Why not drop her in the middle of something after hanging out all day (don’t specify too much without consulting her about it, of course. Assuming makes a fool of you and me.) You’ve come to the conclusion that characterically you’re hungry . Suggest you go out to eat. Maybe suggest a place to go. Ask them if they are hungry. Stomach will always find a new story or at least get you moving to suddenly discover random and amazing facts that will keep you going!
Random tangent. Always fun, give your character a quest, which is a throwaway deux ex machina. Follow the white rabbit, chase a cat, chase a floating hat. Everything that moves them, makes them visible and assignable. Then, as attention gathers, you can drop it like a hot potato and move on to more important things. Or you can hold it to pull her in deeper and play around with it. whatever you like Focus on a magnifying glass, or just shrug and decide you don’t need what you just saw. Yell about something at a market stall or about someone you just saw. Anything to really grab attention!
weather surprise. Oops, that sunny day you were promised? Lie. Dirty lies. So now your sunny day outfit is soaked or at least damp. React! Do you hide under a shelter, do you notice her character outside in the rain, do you enjoy it? What would your character really do in a sudden downpour, a sudden ray of sunshine, a gust of wind, or anything? Geez, a puff of smoke from a passerby with a whistle or a car exhaust might create enough “weather” for you to play.
I think the main thing in all the above cases can be summarized here below, where everyone sighed and scrolled down. Choose a situation/place, react and give space for their reaction. That’s it. Pretend that the world itself has given you a first post by simply existing, and then inform them of that first post through the song and interpretive dance of your writing! If you have a wicked plan or idea, set up everything needed to make it happen in your introductory post now. It saves you some trouble later, and setting up an area beforehand can help prevent those awkward moments when you need a chair but aren’t sure if one is available.
