Bio Photonic Machine System & Image Processing Lab at POSTECH, KOREA
석사 졸업후 대우전자 연구소에서 MEMS 기술을 바탕으로 하는 새로운 개념의 projection TV개발팀에서 MEMS fabrication에서 발생하는 열적응력을 해석 하였습니다. 이후 시스템 개발에 더 관심이 있어 미국 메사추세츠 공대 기계공학과에 유학 하였습니다. 박사과정 동안 첨단현미경 분야의 전문가인 Peter So 교수를 만나서 의생명광학 기술의 발전 가능성을 보았고, 실제 시스템의 개발에 매료되어 다양한 현미경을 개발하였습니다. 2005년 development of high-speed two-photon microscopy and its biomedical applications의 제목으로 박사학위를 받았습니다.
박사학위 이후 본인의 연구분야를 의학연구로 넓히기 위하여 보스턴 하버드의대소속 연구병원의 하나인 메사추세츠 종합병원에서 research fellow로 근무했습니다. 의생명광학 기술에서 현재 임상의학에서 사용되는 기술이 광단층영상 기술입니다. 메사추세츠 종합병원내 광의학 기술을 선도하는 Wellman Center for Photomedicine에서 Johannes F. de Boer 교수의 지도하에 광단층영상 기술의 개발 그리고 생명학 및 임상연구에 적용 등의 연구를 수행하였습니다. 펠로우 과정 동안 화상환자, 성대 질환 환자의 진단기술 개발과 임상연구를 수행했습니다.
현재 포항공과대학교 기계공학과에서 대학원 학생들과 함께 현재의 의생명 광학 기술의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 다양한 광학 시스템을 연구하고 있습니다.
의생명 광학 시스템 연구는 기계공학의 근간인 물리학을 바탕으로 다양한 공학 (기계, 전기전자) 기술을 활용하는 다학제적 연구 입니다. 개발하는 시스템의 적용 대상인 생명학과 의학 지식도 학습할 수 있고 최근 발전하고 있는 딥러닝 기술을 직접적으로 활용하는 분야 입니다. 시스템 개발을 통해 의학에서는 정밀 진단, 정밀 수술에 필요한 영상 가이드 기술로 발전시키며, 생물학에서는 in vivo 연구에 필요한 새로운 현미경 기술 제공, 생명 현상 이해도 증대를 노력합니다. 바이오 광학기계 시스템 개발을 통해 현재의 생물학 의학 문제들을 해결해 나가겠습니다.

Dr. Kim has been studying in the field of Biomedical Optics by starting graduate school at MIT under the supervision of Prof. Peter T. C. So. During his graduate study, he developed high-performance two-photon microscopes such as a high-speed two-photon microscope based on polygonal mirror scanner, multi-color two-photon microscope, multifocal multiphoton microscope based on multianode PMTs etc.
After the completion of his PhD, he worked as a research fellow at Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which is one of largest biomedical optics research centers. He joined the group of Dr. Johannes F. de Boer who is a leading expert in the field of optical coherence tomography. At MGH, he developed various OCT systems and probes, and did various preclinical and clinical studies such as mouse retinal imaging, human vocal fold imaging, and human burn imaging. During his 3 year stay, he had pretty good experience of medical study by imaging patients in the operating room and patient room. He got to know what is required to apply new imaging techniques to patient imaging.
He moved to back to Korea in early 2009 and have been working at POSTECH, Pohang, Korea since then. His laboratory develops novel optical instruments in the field of both fluorescence and coherence imaging and apply to various biological and medical studies.
